Does anyone else have to have a BM every time they go shopping? Maybe this sounds really weird, but it happens to my grandfater too. Whenever I'm in a store...Walmart, clothing store, cd stores, etc...I have to go to the bathroom! I've even had days when I just couldn't go and I walked into a store and started "shopping" just to make myself go! Is this psychological?

I've had that happen too. Of course usually my fiance and I go out to eat, then hit walmart on the way back. My family has horses and when horses get constipated it can be deadly. Well it seems like whenever we put them in the trailer to go somewhere, as soon as their in there, they go. So when our best show horse was constipated, I suggested that we put him in the trailer. And sure enough, it worked! Kind of off subject, but it works the same with all animals, not just us!

Yep -- my hubby. AND HE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE IBS!!! It's amazing. He can't poop all day, and can't figure out why. Then, the MINUTE we go to Safeway, bingo he has to go. I'm flabberghasted. It's got to be a mental thing with him. Safeway and poop. Poop and Safeway.

With me (I'm the one with IBS), it's not poop, but fart. I always have to fart whenever I go to the doctor. It's got to be nerves -- stress -- White Coat Syndrome -- fear of Dr. JellyFinger -- whatever -- but I always have to pass gas when I walk in there. It's like something clicks in my gut the minute I see those white coats. And it doesn't go away until I leave there.

Does any of this help you?

Yes, this does help, Bevrs, just to know I'm not the only one! I've had this problem even before the IBS, but of course it's worse know. I try to think back to my childhood to see if I had any traumatic experiences with shopping that would cause this, but come up empty!

This is from Jerry Seindeld's book Sein Language:
I also find a bookstore to be a wonderful laxative. I don't know what it is. I don't know whether it's the quiet, or all the available reading material, but you walk in there and something just happens. I really think they should eliminate a couple of aisles and put in some nice men's and ladies' rooms in the back, and then a bookstore would really be a wonderful place to visit.

The one store that gets me going is Toys R Us!! No idea why but when i was little i had a D attack on the way, another time i had a D attack at the store and i swear everytime i drive by it i feel like i have to go...weird! I haven't been back to that store in years and luckily i haven't had a reason to go. Maybe it is a mental thing but for some reason it happens!!

Within 10 minutes of getting into a mall, I have an attack. I can't figure it out, either! Only when I'm really stable can I avoid this. Usually, I abandon all dignity in a run for the bathroom in a panicked cold sweat.

Maybe it's the smell of new clothes! It travels to the lower intestine like a fast food meal and wammo we're dead meat!

You're going to laugh, but I haven't been in a store in years because I'm so sensitive to the smell of the chemical they use to finish fabrics. I think it may be formaldahyde. It doesn't cause an attack, just makes me feel ill and headachy and miserable and cranky and claustrophobic and panicky and and and ...etc. And it's NOT all in my head!! It's real. It's a chemical sensitivity. So you all may not be imagining things. Something could really be a trigger.

Hi, there. About all I know of to answer your question is that walking stimulates the bowels. I don't know exactly how to explain it but it's true. If you're constipated, but not in too much pain to move, sometimes taking a walk makes you have to go, sometimes right away. I've found it kind of by accident that this happens. Maybe it's the walking and not necessarily the shopping itself? And I mean longer walks stimulate the bowels, not a short walk from the bedroom to the living room... *grin* hope that helps. Good luck.

Hey, Sommer! I think you've got something there! Come to think of it, every time hubby says, "lets go for a walk," I have to poop. And if I don't go before we leave the house, we'll get as far as just a block down the street, when it'll hit me, and I have to run back home. One time, when we were about a mile away, the big "D" hit me and I barely made it back in time.

Yeah, you're right -- there's something about going for a walk that does it.

Oh, thank goodness it's not just me!

As I'm reading your posts here, I can identify with most (except the clothing! I would NEVER not shop for clothes, I don't care how many races to the potty I have to take!). (oh, and Toy R Us doesn't get me, either...)

Jerry Seinfeld is a genius and I'd love for them to add some big bathrooms in bookstores. I walk in Barnes and Noble and head right to the bathroom. Same with Safeway. My bestfriend, who I often shop with, always laughs at me when we go to Safeway- I think she times me to see how long it's going to take before I excuse myself!

Anyway, glad to have company on the mad dash to the potty when I shop!

Sometimes when I go shopping (groceries or anything) I feel the anxiety hit me for fear of possibly having an attack and sometimes I just have to make a mad dash to the restroom and a lot of times I'll get to the restroom and it will be a false alarm.

I think it is a combination of walking and anxiety.

Heya Bevrs,

Yep, i figured i kind of probably hit the nail right on the head especially as i continued reading everyone else's replies. It became very clear we are all dealing with the muscle contactions that occur in our bowels when we go for what we hope to be a leisurely walk. It usually turns into an uncomfortable situation that becomes more uncomfortable if we try to hold it in! I remember complaining to my mom when i was little about how walking always made me have to poop. Glad I could shed soem light.

Actually, I know it's not the walking for me because I go for walks all the time outside and have no problems. It's specifically in stores, even if I've barely walked at all.

Sequoia, if it's not the walking, then my guess would be anxiety. Worrying about having an attack and not being able to find a bathroom is enough to encourage an attack on even the strongest gut. I had this problem so badly, I had gotten to the point where I couldn't even leave the house. My solution was Michael's hypnosis program. Before I had completed the 100 days, I was over my anxiety and able to get out and go places. I still carried my emergency medicine cabinet in my purse, but nevertheless, I got out and even enjoyed myself!

Yep, anxiety's my guess.

I don't know if most of the post are from IBS -d folks but I am IBS-c and this happens to me sometimes. I think for me it is not anxiety as mentioned in other post but that the shopping relaxes me and then I'll feel the urge.

ME TOO... does not mater WHAT store....or Resturant...it just happens. The lady at Bartell Drugs just sees me and knows within a few minutes I'll be looking for her to let me into the back to go to the bathroom. Everywhere I go...I KNOW where the bathrooms are and just kind of head that direction and walk around a few minutes before I even bother shoppin... really it is like clock work.... unless I just need 1-2 items and can run in and out..... I'll be in that darn bathroom.

Last time I was home sick because of "C" and I was in so much pain..... I kid you not...I drove up to Bartell's and walk around for 10 mins....TAAAAAADDDDDDDDDAAAAAAA........poop time!! Just need that movement I guess?????

I agree sequoia, i bet it's the anxiety that gets to you. Also maybe some pre-wired thinking like um self-fulfilled prophecy kind of thing where you pretty much know it's gonna happen, so it's bound to happen. Try to relax, take some deep breaths and don't think about having to run to the bathroom every time you go shopping. I thought shopping was the only haven we have? :P Good luck and hang in there. I have to go take a walk soon to some stores. I hope i make it. LOL
