Hi, everyone. I am new here, and I was just diagnosed this last week after dealing with this for the last year and not knowing what was going on. I just got started on Zelnorm.
I drink fennel tea several times a day and thankfully, I have been an ashtanga yoga practitioner for almost a year--being a yogini helps with gas BIG TIME. I am also a fish-eating vegetarian who has switched over to soy from dairy, and I can't tell you what a difference it has made. However, I do not have any idea what fruits and vegetables to eat besides bananas. Being a vegetarian with IBS is difficult. I do not eat broccoli, beans, cabbage, lentils, or onions much anymore, but there are SO MANY other vegetables that I shouldn't eat according to this diet. What am I going to do? Is there anyone else out there like me? Thanks.

Jen.

Welcome! Like so many people will tell you, figuring out which fruits and vegetables you can eat is a bit of trial and error. Different people can tolerate different things. For example, I can eat broccoli with no trouble, but not onions or garlic (although Beano helps) and not fruits with tough skins (grapes and apples) - I just don't eat grapes and I peel apples in order to eat them safely. You are fortunate to be able to eat soy things. I can only tolerate a little bit and even then not on an empty stomach. I'd be interested in hearing how yoga helps with the gas. Do you do certain specific moves to help with this or just the overall effect of doing yoga helps? Well, again, welcome - I know you'll find this board helpful in a lot of different ways!

Hi Jen, and welcome to the boards!

You can still have vegetables -- and in fact, you should. Insoluble fiber is very important. It's just a matter of changing the way we're used to cooking them and eating them. For instance, we always have a soluble fiber first, such as potato or rice or pasta or French bread.

Do you have Heather's "The First Year"? All this is explained in there, and it's our bible. It's easy to understand, and it makes a lot of sense. I highly recommend getting it -- it's only about $15.

You're really on the right track with the fennel, switching over from dairy to soy, being a fish-eating vegetarian, and the yoga -- congratulations! You won't have to make nearly the changes that most of us have had to make.

I think the best way to get fruit is in smoothies. Toss some protein powder in a blender with a banana and your favorite fruit (preferrably canned or peeled peaches or something without any skin -- I prefer frozen blueberries), and maybe a little soy milk. YUM! You can have a little bit of fruit after some soluble fiber, so don't give it up!

I have a killer lentil soup recipe in the recipe board; all you need with that is some Beano!

Get Heather's book and check out the recipe board. You'll do just fine. And again -- WELCOME!

Bev

Well, as for the yoga, there are many poses that stimulate the intestines to start moving. That's my problem--things are not moving fast enough, or not at all, and then lots of gas and bloating. I frequently feel worse after eating.
Certain poses involve twisting of the torso and breathing that ujjayi breath (prayer twist, Marichiasanas A,B,C, and D, etc) to detox one's system and get the gas pushed out of there. It really helps. Last night was AWFUL, and I was grumpy because I felt and looked pregnant, I had so much gas and bloat, and I hadn't gone since that morning. Once I did my 75-minute ashtanga practice, I felt so much better and my stomach was flat again! Sometimes it is all I can do. I feel bad for my hubby! (putting up with my gassy self--ha ha)

Welcome, jEN. I think you misunderstood a wee bit. We encourage you to eat as much fruits and veggies as possible. They are mostly insoluble fiber, so try to cook, mash and puree as much as possible to make them easier to digest.
Also, have them with some soluble fiber (ie. rice, white bread, potatoes) etc. to help digest them.
The veggies you pointed out are some of the ones that cause a lot of gas. Use them sparingly. I use onion a lot for flavour. Try small amounts.
There are tons of ways to get your veggies. The sky is the limit. You may even be able to add a few pieces of broccoli in a stir fry and get away with it!
Here is a link explaining insoluble fiber and how to eat it: web page

Hi Jen. I have a lot of trouble with insoluble fiber veggies, too, so I completely understand. And I know the feeling about being so bloated you feel pregnant. You're very smart to be drinking the fennel tea, and that's great that you've been doing yoga anyway! I'm planning on starting it next month, and I'm really excited.

Personally, I have to eat small amount of soluble fiber veggies after I've made sure I have a lot of soluble fiber first. I seem to be very sensative to them, especially green veggies. But the good news is there are lots of great soluble fiber foods that you can eat to stabilize your tummy before you eat those insolubles, even veggies like potatoes, carrots, squash, and more. Here's a link to the list of soluble fiber foods: web page. Eat some of these first and then try some insolubles and you should be okay! Good luck!

Hmmm...sounds interesting. I took a beginners yoga class last spring and really liked it. I may have to look into doing more. Is there a particular type of yoga (it seems like there are different kinds) that is best for IBS?

Andie, check in the yoga board; you'll get a lot more info there.
