Yesterday at lunch I drank 1/2 cup of Vitasoy vanilla - it was my first time with more than just a taste of soy. A couple hours later it was as though I had taken a laxative (not D, just normal), but I had to go about 3 or 4 times. It wasn't an attack, but I really don't need a laxative effect! Now I'm a little leary of soy, but I don't like the taste of rice milk. I wanted to start drinking soy a little because I wanted another source of protein since I've had to cut my red meat out. Beans don't go over too well - so what's left besides poultry? Will I get used to soy and it won't do that - or is that a usual reaction?

I've had lots of trouble with soy milk because of the extra ingredients (preservatives, flavour enhancers). If you try different brands with different ingredients youu might have better luck!

Fish and seafood -- tuna salad with lowfat mayonnaise and cooked shrimp with cocktail sauce! Salmon with mashed potato crust (from Jane Brody's Good Seafoood cookbook). Sushi! Crab cakes! Lobster!!

Unless you're allergic or don't like it.

Have you ever tried Beano? It's a digestive enzyme that can help you digest beans. Since soy is a bean, it can be very helpful to take before you drink that glass of soy milk. Also, I don't know about the reaction you had, but I do know that gas is a normal side effect of any soy product if you're not used to digesting beans. So the good news is it should go away. As for it acting as a laxative, I'm not sure! Maybe someone else has a better answer to that one.

Bean-zyme

As you can see, it is a lot cheaper...

I generally have gas all day, not just after eating certain foods, would it work if I took a couple in the morning as prevention for the day?

Wow, that is a much better price. Have you used this product? Think I might try it.

I'm not sure about that, Rosie. I think Beano and the other enzymes only work when you eat, I don't think they would work on general gassiness. Something like Gas-X would probably be better for that.

Egg whites are also another good source of protein. My boyfriend is a competitive bodybuilder and he created this pancake recipe:

4-6 egg whites
1/2c. 1 minute plain oatmeal
1-2 tablespoons of water
dash of cinnamon

Mix all ingredients together. Spray pan with Pam spray and scoop about 1.4 c. of mix into flat pan and make pancakes.

I top my pancakes off with honey.

Great source of protein and good source of soluble fiber. I eat these for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
