Favorite tips for controlling gas?

One of my big problems is gas. It always seems to be especially problematic when I'm out at a restaurant with friends or when I am invited to their home for dinner. (When I'm at home with just my husband, he copes with it pretty well. ) But when I'm out in public, I'm so afraid I'm going to have an "outburst." What are YOUR best tips for managing gas?

What works best for me (and I've been bloating up with gas for lets see, um, 30 years??!! Yikes) is Gas-X or Phazyme anti-gas caplets. Also sold as store brands like RiteAid. You'll find it near the antacids. Other people will have lots of other suggestions because everybody's different. But I sure wish I'd found Gas-X thirty years ago!! Just take two before you leave the house.

If I'm going to be eating something (beans, broccoli, etc.) that gets me going, I use Beano. Otherwise, I pretty much have an IV of fennel tea attached to me at all times! I use Heather's peppermint & fennel teas and combine them, and sip all day long. Got the idea from Celestial's Tummy Mint. Only difference is they use chamomile too, and Heather's is MUCH better.

If it's not related to C (b/c then it seems nothing works for me) then I take phazyme and lots of fennel tea! Good luck!

All good suggestions. Plus, you can get yoga positions (generally involving folding your arms over your tummy and bending over) that can expel gas. I go hide in the loo and do this!

Mags, do you think the Jarro has been helping us with the gas? It just seems to me that ever since I've been on this stuff my gas has all but disappeared (except, of course, for our infamous lentil gas-producing soup, in which case I turn to the Beano).

Sorry. That was really a question for Mags. Jarro is a Probiotic. Mags and I have been on it for almost 3 weeks now. I think it's helped me A LOT.

I already take the Jarro probiotic!! (Is there a smiley for smacking onself upside the head? ) I didn't even make the connection. How much of it do you take? I use the EPS formula (Enhanced Probiotic System).

Yep. Same stuff. I take 2 every night -- at midnight when my tummy's empty. (That's the ONLY time my tummy's empty!)

I have to ask -- doesn't this hurt even more????? When I get gas, I'm laying on my left side and breathing like I'm about to give birth!

Hi everyone,
I'm new to the board and am reading through all the old messages. What comfort to know that there are other people out there with IBS! Anyway, I haven't seen any mention of lemon balm (melissa officinalis)- it helps me more than anything else with my gas and bloating. I use 1-2 tsp per cup of water and let it steep 5-10 minutes (longer and it gets a little bitter). Hope this helps!

I just did a search for this stuff and discovered it's quite a "fix-all" for everything from cravings suppressor to cold remedy!

Yes, it's an herb, and I just make it into a tea. I believe it's related to mint, and is also anti-spasmodic and anti-viral. Just do a google search and you'll get tons of hits. It honestly works wonders!

Is this something the natural food store would carry or did you have to order it online?

Sorry, I forgot to mention to steep lemon balm in a covered conatiner, like a tea pot, so that the oils don't evaporate and it is more effective.

Pixna,

I got it at a health food store. They're looking getting me a deal on a bulk quantity because I go through so much!

Are you currently buying a prepackaged product? If so, could you tell me the name brand so I know what to look for and could give it a try? Thanks!

If I can get my gas out it doesn't usually hurt that much. I just get really uncomfortable if I'm gassy. Having said that, I was in hospital b4 Christmas with gas that wouldn't come out (ie. colic).

Hi Pixna,

I live in Montreal/Quebec/Canada and the brand is called "Clef des Champs". I think it's a local brand, so I don't know if that will help? I noticed, when cruising the web, that it goes by several different names, so if you go out looking maybe bring those and/or the latin name with you. Hope that helps!

OMG, I'm so excited!! My mom planted lemon balm in our yard years ago, and it's completely overrun almost everything else. I didn't know there was an actual medicinal use for it! Woohoo! I can't wait for the growing season.

Hi, I'm new here too! I really like that idea of the lemon balm. I'll have to search for it. Recently, i've been crazy for natural remedies. Hopefully I can afford the stuff and can try it out. Thanks for the advice.

Do try it, but for those that have GERD be careful. I tried it (I am willing to try just about anything (and I mean anything) to get all of the gas out) and it set off my GERD big time.

The yoga is helping me pass it, but I have no clue how to prevent it. But I will keep trying.
