High,

I get problems with wheat in pasta for instance and several other fruits and veg higher in fructose. I wanted to know which soluble fibre foods therefore are suitable for fructose intolerance from this websites published list -

http://www.helpforibs.com/diet/fiber1.asp

or you can just use this copied and pasted from the soluble fibre page(I am from the UK)-

Rice
Pasta and noodles
Oatmeal
Barley
Fresh white breads such as French or sourdough (NOT whole wheat or whole grain)*
Rice cereals
Flour tortillas
Soy
Quinoa
Corn meal
Potatoes
Carrots
Yams
Sweet potatoes
Turnips
Rutabagas
Parsnips
Beets
Squash and pumpkins
Mushrooms
Chestnuts
Avocados (though they do have some fat)
Bananas
Applesauce
Mangoes
Papayas (also digestive aids that relieve gas and indigestion)

Thanks very much.

Wheat does not contain free fructose which is a known IBS trigger. It does contain fructans - a carbohydrate and high FODMAP which has been proven to be an IBS trigger in some people.

Fructose is only a problem when a food contains more of the sugar fructose than sugar glucose. This problem is called fructose malabsorption.

Individuals with problems with fructose in any form have a disease called hereditary fructose intolerance (HFI). This is a serious medical condition cause by a genetic trait that is usually detected in childhood. If you think you have talk to you doctor immediately - as this disorder can be life threatening unlike fructose malabsorption which isn't.

Kate Scarlata - a dietitian with IBS - has an excellent overview article on the FODMAP diet in her blog
