I have IBS-C and am going to get tested for fructose malabsorption this week. On this website, Heather says that fructose "can cause gas, bloating, and diarrhea", so should I still avoid or limit fructose even if I test negative for fructose malabsorption or should I still avoid/limit it?

Fructose in combination with equal amounts of glucose such as it found in white/brown sugar is not an IBS trigger.

Foods that contain more fructose than glucose like honey, apples, pears, agave, etc can be a problem because it is the excess fructose - that is fructose in excess of glucose - that is malabsorbed in individuals with fructose malabsorption (I have it). I didn't have the test I just removed all foods with excess fructose for a couple of weeks and it became very clear I had a problem with it

Btw Syl, I am planning to start a low fodmap diet. Since fructose is one of the things on a low fodmap diet, do I still need to avoid excess fructose even if my fructose malabsorption test comes out negative? Or does the negative test conclude that I can safely consume excess fructose without a problem?

Likely okay in moderation as everyone including those without fructose malabsorption can experience its effects in larger amounts

Syl,

What kind of symptoms did you have with this?

After I take apple sauce with my VSL#3 probiotic, my stomach feels a little gassy for a half hour or so.

Thanks Much!!

IBS returned in late July 2013 after taking 2 oral contrasts for a CT scan for cancer follow up. Had more acupuncture with different practitioner in summer 2014, but received little benefit.

Yes - that could be a typical symptoms of fructose malabsoption. Remove all foods with more fructose than glucose like apples. apple sauce, pears, mango, honey, agave, etc from your diet and see if things improve
