Sooooooo happy to have found this wonderful website! Was diagnosed with "spastic colon" 30 years ago but just continued to eat everything I loved and suffer the IBS-d. Started having cramps last September with constipation, which I haven't had since childhood. Had a colonoscopy and was diagnosed with diverticulosis and IBS. Have been drinking your peppermint tea and taking the capsules. Have just ordered your book and the Acacia fiber. Have high cholesterol (runs in family) and can't take statins (nor would I) so am on prescription Omega-3s which cause alot of heartburn and burping. Still bloated and crampy and have now been told I need to watch my blood sugar as it is climbing. Have read so many of your articles, but not sure what to do or eat at this point, as all the IBS foods are bad for the pre-diabetes. I am a carb-lover, and have switched to mostly Sourdough bread. I love meat and cheese and beans, as I have a huge garden where I grow tons of fresh veggies tomatoes and dried beans, and now don't know what to do! I am confused and uncertain and frustrated. Have been healthy and active all my life, and now, at 66, I feel like I have failed somewhere! Take enzymes with each meal and a probiotic once a day, as well as Tumeric and vitamins D and B, magnesium, COQ10 and Glucosamine.

Hi there. Once you start SLOWLY building that soft acacia soluble fiber, (It is slow fermenting and a pr"E"biotic/not really gassy like most other soluble fibers.) following instuctions closely, it will help "keep" the colon filled like the higher ratio soluble fiber foods and keeps you regular and blood sugar stable. Download the cheatsheet http://www.helpforibs.com/ to help some until you read the book The First Year:IBS (I hope). Eat small frequent slowly eaten meals, also additionally good for blood sugar. I read on an unbiased website that sourdough doesn't cause the insulin spikes like regular white bread does. You may just want to do foods for flaring, until getting the gas down;Normal is 10-20 outputs/day-where it shouldn't irritate the colon. Flaring below can irritates the upper GI and can cause heartburn and burping for me. I can't do even small amounts of the oatmeal-gassy for me, even if drinking at least 6C of water/day. Alot more soluble fiber than most of the safe foods; This is a low residue diet for the most part. Included in the book: no meat or dairy on this EFI diet;I don't do any beans while flaring. Peel, de-seed and puree most produce if need be, especially while flaring; Can incorporate stage 1 or 2 baby smooth food like green beans and squash;a little of that is plenty for me. I made my own meals version of the hate to cook-restaurant menu in the book, peeling and de-seeding the tomato for instance and no onion, because I am sooo sensitive and don't trust restaurants. Yah, it's nice to have a forum/site to go to;Thanks to Heather. Best

Thanks so much for your positive comments! I have been on Heather's website for weeks, and am garnering a wealth of information! I guess I am just frustrated at what is causing my symptoms, as I haven't really eliminated much from my current diet, except for ground beef, steaks, hot dogs and the bad veggies that I used to eat tons of for their healthy properties! And my beloved beans and lentils...I am having withdrawal symptoms! It's just going to take a lot of reading and practicing which I am willing to do but I stay frustrated due to a husband who drinks cokes, and eats ANYTHING and EVERYTHING he wants...hard to cook two different meals...

Tried the fennel tea instead of the peppermint tea? The peppermint in tea form can worsen a heartburn situation. Also, I would take the oil supplement on a full stomach for sure or can trigger spasming. Try spreading throughout the day if not already.
