After a physical earlier this week my blood work showed a B12 defiency. Doctor advises that on next visit in three weeks I am to start taking B12 shots.

On looking at foods with high B12 content a number of them, such as beef liver, beef and fish I would have a problem with due to IBS and diverticulosis.

My IBS has been more bothersome last few weeks and I imagine some of it is caused by the B12 defiency.

Wondering though if I am to receive shots montly then should I worry about eating more foods with B12

Hi ArtKen

This is something you should ask your doctor. Would the deficiency be in that you don't get enough foods containing B12, or is it that your body does not adequately take in enough of it from foods - I have not heard of IBS symptoms being caused by deficiencies in food nutrition. Perhaps he suspects anemia. And, ask yourself - why would the doc wait three weeks to begin the shots? Usually they would give you the first shot at the same appointment.

This info may be useful to you:

Hope you get it sorted - all the best to you.

Thank you. I did ask about whether this needed right away and doctor said it was not a crisis situation and shot could wait until next visit in 3 weeks.

100g of salmon has twice the recommended amount of vit B12 I believe.

now: stable through EFI+FODMAP dieting (no lactose/no fructose/some fructans and some polyols)

before: IBS-D(pseudo-diarrhoea), bloating, often unbearable pain esp from too much fat: Apr 2007- Dec 2010

[I've tried VSL#3 -> I could tolerate v good amounts of IF (even with less SF), it worked great (but overall I find it too expensive)]

Thanks for comment. I can tolerate some salmon so may give it a try.
