Hi, I just wanted to share a few things that have REALLY made a big difference to my symptoms over the past couple of months. I know these won't apply to everyone as we're all different but since my life has been so much less painful and difficult recently I thought it was worth mentioning, just in case it helps anyone out there!

My main symptoms have always been pain and bloating with a tendency towards C rather than D.

2 things that seem to have made a world of difference:

Firstly, I eat pretty much according to the eating for IBS guidelines which definitely helps, especially the bit about eating small meals regularly (no big gaps!)

Secondly, and I know this might sound weird but it's just my experience, I don't drink with my meals or for about an hour afterwards. I kept a symptom diary religiously for a couple of months - this and the size of the meal were the factors that most reliably predicted whether or not I had symptoms. I don't subscribe to the view that drinking with food "dilutes" stomach enzymes or anything like that I hasten to add; I don't know why this helps me, but it definitely does.

Maybe it's to do with the volume of stuff my intestines can handle and drinking after meals tips me over the threshold for symptoms? Whatever it is I thought I'd just put it out there in case anyone else finds that it helps them too :-)

Drinking plenty between meals is very important of course, as per eating for IBS advice! I don't want to contradict any of the advice on this site, this is purely an extra thing that I've found really helpful.

Rebecca you are so right. I don't know about IBS, but it certainly helps with GERD. I have been dealing with severe GERD (meds no longer help), and have found that if I don't drink with my meals, I am much, much better. I also don't drink as much fluid between meals as I used to, and find that this helps also, along with the small meals. It doesn't matter to me how it works, but that it does. Along with limiting fluids with meals, and using marshmellow root and slippery elm in combination in a product called Acid Ease, my GERD is so much better.
