Hello Everyone,

I recently took a food allergy test and turns out I'm mildly allergic to all meat and soy products on top of IBS-D. My naturopath suggested that since I can't seem to digest meats so well my problem could be a digestive enzyme deficiency and she gave me supplements. I've been taking them once or twice a day with meals and so far it's going alright. I wanted to ask if any of you have any experience with digestive enzymes. Any help/info would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Generally speaking your body produces all the necessary digestive enzymes it needs. Some digestive enzymes found in supplements are destroyed by stomach acide before they can be useful.

However, some particular digestive enzymes such as lactase can breakdown lactose in milk and Beano (alpha-galactosidase) which can help to breakdown complex sugar found in things like beans and cereal grains.

Generally speaking a mixture of digestive enzymes in a supplement frequently contain some, if not many, enzymes that are not likely beneficial. And sometimes these products are high in insoluble fibre from plant material too. However, specific enzymes such as lactase and Beano that have a specific clinically proven purpose and effect can be extremely helpful.
