Has anyone experienced light to severe Nausea when IBS is active? I can't seem to get rid of the nausea. Don't know if it's from the IBS or anxiety. Could use some feedback on this topic.

I have problems with nausea often and especially when I'm having an "attack." (which can last for days...) Sometimes it is so bad I almost vomit I try to drink hot tea and eat things like bread (I do gluten free), toast or crackers in between meals...You might try that if you haven't already?

I know my attacks usually come several days after I've eaten something I shouldn't have. Then they can last up to a week or so....and the nausea is the worst for me in the morning. I know it's very frustrating.

Thank you for the reply. My nausea is also worst in the morning. How long before the nausea subsided?

For me it depends on how aggrevated my system is...sometimes a day or two, then again it has lasted more than a week...especially when I couldn't figure out what the trigger was that was causing it....hope things improve for you soon:)

SO SORRY about your nausea! YES...nausea is actually one of my primary symptoms, and for about 2 1/2 years it lead to long episodes of vomiting that would leave me exhausted. Because this doesn't seem to be a typical issue for many with IBS, the doctors overlooked it, calling it food poisoning! Yes...food poisoning EVERY MONTH for a couple of years ??!! It was so frustrating to know that that wasn't what was happening, but no doctors were figuring it out.

I've talked with my GI a lot about it now that I've been diagnosed with severe IBS. He said it's actually more common than what you may read in books or articles on IBS. The actual vomiting he said was due to the fact that I get so constipated, then have severe spasms in my intestines, and it stirs up my system to the point where my stomach wants to get everything out - and vomiting is how it comes out! Yuck (and painful).
I haven't actually thrown-up in about 8 months now thanks to major changes in diet, but I do still have pretty bad fights with the nausea at times. I do have a prescription for zofran that is sublingual. It helps most of the time if I get hit with a sudden wave of bad nausea. The swallow pills never worked because I'd throw up before it could get in to my system. It doesn't always work, and sometimes I just have to sit very still, sitting upright, and just try to wait it out.
I know it's a terrible way to feel, and I sympathize with you a ton. I hope you can find ways to relieve it.

Oh...this also works for me- sometimes if I eat a banana right away the nausea will die down faster. I guess it's the soluble fiber. I do know that what Heather says about not having an empty stomach is true for me. Overeating is bad, of course, but for me having an empty stomach is actually worse. A steady flow of small IBS-safe snacks all day helps me a LOT with my nausea. Believe it or not, I even carry a banana with me in my purse almost all the time! It's like emergency medicine!!
Beware if you do take anything like zofran...no one told me at first that they can cause constipation (not a good thing to forget to tell a person with IBS-C!!). I just have to be extra watchful about plenty of soluble fiber supplements and water, etc, when I have to take them.
I hope you feel better soon!

Just wanted to agree with you Kelly Jean....I, too find that I MUST eat something even when I feel terrible and I often do eat a banana as well(or half a banana) and it will help. It took me a long time to figure out just what you said that an empty stomach is my worst enemy. Give this a try Beamer and hopefully it will work for you too.
