Has anybody taken this to help with sleep?

1) Does this help much with sleep?
-IF so, does it wear off or remain effective and non-addictive?

2) Is it safe for IBS or have you gotten problems for this pill?

3) Are all brands the same, or are any NOT safe for IBS?

I have a friend who has tried using valerian tea...don't recommend it as it has a terrible taste and smell. They didn't have any luck with it and switched to melatonin, which I am now trying myself. Don't know about valerian pills, etc..though?

I've taken valerian capsules off and on for years with no adverse effects. I'd say it works for me about 80% of the time.

I once was taking Valerian root capsules.

1 after the first 5 capsules, started working like a dream. this is what normal people must be like, they are tired, lie on their bed, close their eyes and literally within 3 mins you are asleep. it was wonderful.

2 back in the day knew nothing about dieting and triggers and was eating pretty much everything but it did seem to help, hence my subsequent conviction that IBS must have a lot to do with seratonin levels. but I wouldn't wish to pronounce a judgement on this as it was a long time ago.

I had to stop regrettably. the nightmares (common side-effect) were so disturbing that I just could not cope with that.

now: stable through EFI+FODMAP dieting (no lactose/no fructose/some fructans and some polyols)

before: IBS-D(pseudo-diarrhoea), bloating, often unbearable pain esp from too much fat: Apr 2007- Dec 2010

[I've tried VSL#3 -> I could tolerate v good amounts of IF (even with less SF), it worked great (but overall I find it too expensive)]

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements has a fact sheet on Valerian root that gives a good overview of Valerian and clinical trials on its use for sleep disorders. Overall its efficacy as a sleep promoting aid is inconclusive.

It is usually sold as a herbal dietary supplement in the form of dried ground plant material which is mostly insoluble fiber.

I have felt really yawny/lethargic the last few days, including some stomach aches or general unease.
Wonder if Valerian is to blame.....

In my herb books it says to take valerian tincture throughout day if flaring, before eating. Yes it can cause more vivid dreams, then try NOT taking it before sleeping for that situation or take less at that time of day maybe. If discontinuing after long term use, taper off slowly. I really like the stuff. Webmed's website has info on the herb.
