Melatonin is a powerful GI motility regulator that appears to play a role in IBS . However, the sublingual version is not likely to help with IBS. In order to have an impact on IBS melatonin has to be delivered directly to GI tract and not absorbed into the blood stream as it is using a sublingual tablet.

Interesting...I see you were taking 3mg and experienced results after a few weeks....maybe then I'm not taking enough with only .5? Maybe I should give it another week or so at this dosage to see how things progress? As I stated it does help with sleep for me at this dose.

Yes - that dose is quite low. You might find the information dosages of interest. Don't expect any improvement in IBS symptoms using a sublingual version of melatonin

Thanks for the article, Syl. I think I will stay with the lower dose for now as I am sleeping (a wonderful thing) with that. I am not taking the sublingual but regular so we'll see if it does anything for the IBS symptoms as the days continue. I really hate to up the dose as it says in the article to take just what is needed, etc...and there are side effects for higher doses, etc...Is it your understanding that melatonin is a "temporary" thing to take or can it be taken indefinitely??

I think little is known about its long term effects. Most studies have been short term done on daily doses ranging from 0.1 mg to 1 gram. This discussion about melatonin may be of interest.

I take this quite frequently, the sublinqual 2 mg. It does not seem to affect the gut one way or the other. It really does help me sleep, because I would never take any strong meds...too many side effects. The only thing that does happen with the Melatonin, is on occasion I have strange dreams. Not bad, not scary, just weird, but it's worth it to me!

For some reason melatonin used to really bother me, made me feel agitated - but in reading this, I can see where I may have had the wrong dose/type. But what really helps me now whenever I might have sleep issues is the hypnotherapy - I just listen to the relaxation session (or another favorite) before bed and no side effects or ongoing costs!;) Hypno puts your brain into a slower cycle and many fall asleep during sessions anyway - so it's a natural!

I have used several different relaxation and sleep cds (not specifically the Ibs hypnotherapy) etc...and while they do help to relax, I would still find myself awake several times a night. But, I agree that all these things are wonderful safe alternatives
