what a detailed article, although... erm regarding FODMAPs I don't think cherries have excess fructose
or peaches excess fructans..
and barley contains v little fructans as far as I knew.

nonetheless loads of issues addressed in the whole article.

now: stable through EFI+FODMAP dieting (no lactose/no fructose/some fructans and some polyols)

before: IBS-D(pseudo-diarrhoea), bloating, often unbearable pain esp from too much fat: Apr 2007- Dec 2010

[I've tried VSL#3 -> I could tolerate v good amounts of IF (even with less SF), it worked great (but overall I find it too expensive)]

Two of the authors of the article are the Australian researchers that developed the FODMAP approach.

Not sure about cherries but in the paper reference below they did some measurements on some common Australian fruits and veggies. Of course the results might be different for some varieties found elsewhere in the world.

In the abstract they say "Fruits with low, but detectable, fructans included longon, white peach, persimmon, and melon (range, 0.21-0.46 g/100 g fw).". Individuals sensitive to fructans may have problems with these fruits. Also, wheat, rye, and barley contain fructans.

Guess that makes sense. But no other source on FODMAPs has ever mentioned cherries as fructose heavy, hence my surprise.

As for fructans, even for me, who appears quite sensitive, there is a tolerable amount and wheat is by the far the most annoying culprit, rye and barley are much more suitable:

That article was written 5 years or so before the current article. They may have found that rye and barley are not as well tolerated as they originally thought and it does cause problems for some.

oh!

although its fructan content is unlikely to have been altered/ erroneously measured 5 years ago?

The practical reports from individuals with GI disorders that are using the FODMAP approach may have indicated that the lower levels of fructans in rye and barley may still be problematic contrary to the researchers' first thoughts.
