Frozen v Cooked Food Question

I am unsure about how much I eat sometimes due to differences in weight.

EX 1: I take out frozen chicken breast, it weights 6 oz. I defrost, cook it, and weight, it is now 4.5 oz. So have I eaten say 40g protein (or whatever the 6 oz equiv is) or 25g (or whatever the 4.5 oz equiv is).

EX2: I take out frozen baked fries, they weight 9 oz. I defrost, bake, and it is now 6 oz. Have I eaten 60 or 40 g carbs?

Labels often just give weight, don't specify raw/frozen/cooked...making it hard to know particularly for pre-cooked but frozen products.

Thanks.

According to the USDA a database

100 gram raw chicken breast without skin has 75 gram of water and 21 grams protein.

100 gram cooked chicken breast without skin has 60-68 grams of water and 30-34 grams protein. The increase in protien in the same size protion is due to water loss due to cooking.

Some packaged meats such as chicken from a supermarket are injected with water to increase the weight and hence profit margin. It is likely most of what you are losing is water.

When you eat an uncooked portion specified on the package you are eating the number of grams of carbs and protein given on the label. The resultant product will be lighter mostly due to water loss from heating.

So basically what you are saying is, when deciding/determining how much food I ate, go with the weight AFTER cooking, not before cooking.

If I measure 6 oz of Chicken Breast frozen/pre cooked and 4 oz post/cooked...go with the 4 oz cooked?

Yes, of course. Sites, like nutritiondata.com and nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/ clearly say if the food described is raw or cooked.

Well that stinks!
Because pre-weight...I always have maybe 9 oz, post cooked, maybe 6!

ARGH!
