My husband and I were at Subway last night and I always get Lay's baked chips to go with my sub. I noticed that Lay's had another type of chip called Lay's Light Original Potato Chips. They don't have any fat and only 75 calories per serving. They are made with some kind of olestra oil. I don't know anything about that and never heard of it before and I was wondering if these could be safe to eat especially since there is no fat. Here is the link for the chips.

Any opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Olestra is an indigestible oil substitute that is known to cause gas and D in normal individuals. In 1996 when the FDA approved the use of olestra they required the following statement on the label of good using it - "This Product Contains Olestra. Olestra may cause abdominal cramping and loose stools. Olestra inhibits the absorption of some vitamins and other nutrients. Vitamins A, D, E, and K have been added." As a result of the absorption problem with fat soluble vitamins foods using this product must supplement the product with these vitamins. Unfortunately, due to industry pressure and despite having received more complaints about olestra than any other food additive in history, in 2003 the FDA dropped its requirement for a warning label on olestra-containing chips.

I'm not an expert, but you could try Baked! Lays. They taste unbelievably great and baked potato chips, I've heard, are IBS-safe. Not to mention, they have less fat than Original Lays. Enjoy!

Thanks Syl! I thought that there must be something like that, that wasn't good. Now that you say that I do seem to recall that there was something out there with certain "healthier" chips that caused problems for even non-IBS people. I appreciate it! I'll stick to my baked lays!
