I have noticed this year more than ever how much my IBS is tied to anxiety. Even anticipationg an exciting, happy event like a date just destroys me with spasm. My therapist tried me on an anxiety med a while back but I stopped it after 3 days because of the C. Are there any anxiety meds that might be helpful and not constipating? And yes I'm also trying to address the anxiety with breathing, mindfulness, yoga etc. But not making much progress.

IBS-C, lots of spasm and trapped gas.

Renee, I suffer from a great deal of anxiety as well, which seems to be the primary trigger of my IBS symptoms (I, however, am IBS-D).

I have never wanted to take any medications, although I am beginning to think about it since nothing else seems to be working.

But you might consider giving Michael Mahoney's Anxiety Hypnotherapy a try. You can find a great deal of information on his IBS Audio Program 100 on these message boards. It is a hypnotherapy designed for dealing with IBS symptoms and for almost six months I had great success with it. But recently he released a version for for just anxiety.

I am halfway through the anxiety program and I cannot really say it has helped because I have been going through a lot more anxiety and stress in my life now than normal. I find concentrating on the tapes or relaxing for them impossible right now.

However, I would suggest just giving them a shot or talking it over with your therapist. It's not a hefty investment ($70-80) and many people have had success with his programs.

Good luck! And if I end up trying any anxiety medications myself I will let you know how they effect my IBS symptoms.

Try Remeron (mirtazapine).
It's an antidepressant, but it is used to treat anxiety as well. I have been on it for years!
