You know what, I hate the SCD diet.
To me, it is the most unreasonable, demanding diet you could ask somebody to go on...far moreso then EFI or FODMAP.

It depends on your attitude, and the trade-offs. For my husband, who was on the toilet ten times a day with bloody D and terrible cramping, he finds the SCD a reasonable alternative to chemo-therapy drugs, which was what his doctor wanted him to take. In fact, I'd even say he's thankful that he has the opportunity to control his disease with diet.

Right Frygirl, when you look at the big picture for your husband...the diet is not so "demanding" and not so "unreasonable". I would much prefer the diet to the pain of cramps/bloody D or chemo drugs, for that matter.

I can't say I am completely pain free, because I am still experiencing some IBS symptoms. However, if I understand what you're asking, when I initially started the diet and increased my intake of fruits, veggies, nuts and fats, no, I did not experience pain. That lower gut pain mostly went away when I stopped eating starches and grains. Having challenged the diet a few times recently with oats, potatoes and bread, I've found myself doubled over with crampy gas pain, so for me, there is a clear connection between those foods and IBS symptoms.

I did okay right away. In fact, I felt great after my first meal without grains or starches. No bloating or gas. If you know conclusively you have problems with fructose, then avoid those foods you know cause problems. If you suspect you have a problem with fructose, it might be worth challenging on this diet. I thought I had a problem with lots of fruits and veggies, but it turned out the real problems were grains and starches. But that's me, and we are all different.
