Hi I'm hoping somebody might be able to help me. I've had IBS since i was 12 (now 29yrs) mainly IBS A. Symptons were mainly loose stools and pain alternated with C. But on the whole following a bland diet I have managed it.
In August I experienced something I have never had before, it started with a colicky feeling, like trapped wind and I started passing mucus, no stools just mucus but the urgency of it left me housebound! At the time I was on holiday and worried how I would get home because of the urgency of it so the doctor prescribed me steroids as they thought it was colitis, this seemed to help and within a week it had mostly cleared up.
My doctor referred to a specialist and 2 months later I had a sigmoidoscopy. It showed no signs of inflammation and neither did the biopsies. All has been well since August until a week ago, in the morning I couldnt really go to the toilet and as the morning went on I started to get crampy colicky pains, I had some some lunch and the cramps and convulsions in my stomach started to become so bad that I had to go to the toilet and pass a normal stool. The pain continued so I took some anti spasmodics which seemed to ease it off. I got home from work and had some toast etc.. feeling a bit better but before bed the pain had returned, it was almost like a trapped wind pain. I went to sleep and as soon as I opened my eyes in the morning I had to bolt to the bathroom. Not diarreah as such just lots of gas, brown mucus and also normal stools. I had to go a further 2 times each time just passing mucus though this time it was more of a yellow colour.
I went to see my Dr and explained I need to get back to work and didnt want to suffer until next week and neither did he want me to so he prescribed me the steroids again. I had my follow up appointment booked with the Gastro Dr on Tuesday so he said I'll be able to discuss it with him.
I saw the gastro dr on Tuesday and explained that I had all these symptons again and that some of the mucus had very small streaks of blood in it, mainly darker blood. The Gastro Dr said that I'd had the tests done back in october and they showed no scarring or inflammation therefore is not colitis or proctitis. Great!! But what the hell is it? Its not the kind of IBS I've ever experienced, he said it may be rectal spasms and he'll refer me to someone else who deals with that. He told me not to continue with the steroids (I'd been on them 6 days on tuesday).Well yesterday and today has been a bit better the urgency and pain have decreased although there is still a fair bit of mucus.I just dont know whats going on, its not the normal pattern of IBS for me.
I'm beginning to feel at my wits end as the results came back normal but I have all these symptons, my worry is that the first lot of steroids calmed everything down so that when they tested me nothing showed up.

Has this happened to anyone else, are these symptons typical??? Help please???

I am so sorry for you. personally I haven't had mucus like that but others here have posted that they have.
Are you taking a soluble fiber suppplement?

"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

i have also had the mucous problem at times. i just discussed this with my GI who told me it's a symptom of ibs-d. he said mucous is normal and it's passed usually within BMs of "normal people". having ibs-d it seems to be more prone to come out after BMs instead of during them (where u wouldn't normally see it) he also said the intestines also exfoliate sort of like our skin, etc so often there will be those particles and such that come out with the mucus. he said it's related to the ibs. i find i pass it more so after i've been backed up abit and then it seems to happen then. if i'm having a normal day and a normal bm i don't see it at all. i take the acacia fiber and i also take lomotil as needed for urgency issues. it helped me more than anything i've tried so far.

I have also had mucus in my bowel movements especially in the beginning. My GI doctor told me that was common with IBS-D. Ever since I started on a fiber supplement (now taking acacia fiber)and following the IBS diet I very rarely have that problem. Only when I've eaten something I shouldn't have. If your not already taking a fiber supplement maybe try that. Good luck, I understand what you're going through it'll get better.

Thanks for your replies. One question that bothers me though is that I've always had a bit of mucus and thought that was normal as its always been with the stool. The worrying thing with this has been the urgency and passing mucus on its own with no stool and the pain!! The only way I can describe it is as if you opened your eyes in the morning and someone had given you an enema whilst you were asleep, that is what the pain and urgency is like, yet its not diorreha its just mucus and normal stools. Has anyone had this problem of passing mucus on its own?

Hi!
I struggle with this same thing actually. It's been a new development in my symptoms, but I do understand. So, my issue is that when the pain gets really bad and the mucous is coming on its on, I also sometimes get blood in the mucous. I was pretty freaked out and went to see my doc about it all. She told me the mucous isn't anything too alarming (still not healthy), but the bigger problem was the bleeding. For me, my colonoscopy showed possible colitis, which explains the bleeding and mucous. I would still encourage a talk with a doc about it--I know my doc said being very C can be a reason for the mucous, but I'm pretty regular now thanks to daily colace and align... So, I believe I have a touch of colitis--but am trying very hard not to take any medication for it. I'm sensitive to it all, and really don't want to have those side effects. But, even with the colitis, I think a lot of my cramping/mucous stuff is probably IBS related. Lucky me--I get them both! ha! I don't know if any of this helps, but just wanted to share my story with yoU!
hang in there--

Expelling mucous with/without pain was one of my symptoms when I had UC. Mesalamine enemas (Rowasa)helped greatly with the symptoms.

Yes, I did once. I was out and about and thought I was going to have a period of D, so I rushed to the john and it was only white mucous, no stool. Freaked me out because I thought I was going to have D all over myself. Never had it again, thank God.

Thanks guys, Aly as awful as I feel for you that you suffer too its sooo nice to know that someone else understands what its like. This is my worry, that I have in fact got a mild form of colitis. I seem to have every sympton but based on the sigmoidoscopy result which was 2 and a half months later and after a course of steroids the gastro doctor tels me its not colitis and may be rectal spasms. When there is blood in the mucus and the pain and urgency of it I find this hard to believe, I also get a distended tummy during the flare up too. I just feel like I've been fobbed off and as if i'm on red alert all the time not knowing when it will happen again. It sucks, all I want is some answers

Oh I hear ya!! It's really tough. I have days that are SO frustrating. I am really lucky that I found a new doc over the past few years. She's very thorough and willing to really listen and help. I have had docs in the past give me the "it's IBS, eat more fiber" and run me out the door... So, I'm glad I have agood doc. That said, with inconclusive biopsies and such, she's at a dead end. Doesn't want to give meds if not neccesary, but doesn't want me bleeding. it's so tough--and a fuzzy line. I can tell you my colonoscopy showed inflamation that looked like colitis, yet my biopsies were negative. I had TWO colonoscopies that showed this. (yuck!)
I agree, I hate that you're suffering, but its's so supportive to have people to discuss this with. It's a bit embarassing to discuss, so I appreciate these boards so much.
Hang in there--I've found dietary changes help the most. I do low fiber, low fat, small meals, no dairy, no red meat. That helps me out quite a bit. I miss eating normally, but I am thankful for mostly good days!
