I've been away from the forum for a while but not much has changed so the frustration of living with IBS is still there. I find that while the potential negative effects of consuming "trigger foods" will almost always occur, the same can not be said for enjoying relief while being strict and adhering to the diet. It is always there.

So with that said, I just don't get how this is an "incurable condition." I don't know how severe my symptoms are compared to others but this is something that impedes my functionality day to day. I'm only 36 and afraid that I'm heading towards having to resort to a colostomy due to my D symptoms and incontinence.

IBS is incurable and yes not eating triggers helps not get blowups but doesn't mean you feel good. I have this exactly. You can only do so much with diet; unless you have an extra food intolerance. Beyond that fiber, water intake, sleeping, stress relief, exercise, how and when you eat all play a factor.
D is pretty controllable when you have gotten these things down correctly. Bloating and pain can be relentless.
IBS is incurable because no one really knows what it exactly is.

"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

I disagree with this statement BTW. There is a lot more to it. IBS is not a food intolerances or many intolerances combined.

Little Minnie,

Are you referring to my statement?
If so....we agree!!
I said it is NOT all about what we eat....in other words there is a lot more to it.

Cliched though it may be, you are what you eat. And whereas stress can exarcebate IBS or indeed upset the digestion of even a healthy individual, diet is the key to getting your IBS under control. I did not use to believe in this and thought that eating whatever I want and adhering to any sort of diet made little difference. Now I don't agree.

A lot of people get bloated from various foods, I can testify that pre-IBS I'd had a lot of bloating, yet never had pain, D or C. Then there was a year in my life when I did not even have bloating due to eating wholewheat bread. Those days are gone, now that I have IBS I can't eat wholegrains. But was it not for the adjustment of my diet and sticking to it for more than a week (!), I'd still have (pseudo-) D. If you have D, nutrients may not reach you and there is a whole host of other complications. I am eating according to EFI rules and taking 3g of SF supplement per day. I do have bloating and I do have a little pain but eating this way has made all the difference. And it's not just about symptoms, I pretty much lived with frequent D for over a year. As I never had urgency and BMs were the most time not smooth at all, I lived with it, thinking exactly along the lines you're thinking.

There are medications which may work, but don't believe it's wise to take them for ever. Hypnosis is something that has worked wonders for people. But the most simple and most effective way of controlling what and how you eat is something that should be working I believe. I do wonder, is it really that you're following the EFI diet to the word and also that you have tried it for at least 2 weeks continuously? And it still has not worked? Do you still have D? Or what symptoms do you have?

if the EFI diet is not working, have you heard about the FODMAP approach? Look at any of Syl's posts, there are excellent links in his signature.

Like a lot of people on this site I'm sure, I feel like I've tried everything. Besides a period not long ago where I followed the EFI diet very strictly, I practically begged to be tested for fructose and something else that I now can't recall, based on FODMAPs as well as using FODMAP diet (I even met with a dietitian), I've tried several medications including SSRI's acknowledging the brain-gut connection, tried hypnosis and so on. All this while being an active person and taking fiber daily. I've done probiotics, avoid multivitamins and just take calcium etc. etc. etc. But, to some degree, it's still always there. And I guess the point I'm trying to make is that while I welcome any relief or decrease in symptoms, it's just really frustrating and disheartening that the gain for doing all this seems minimal compared to the consequences of doing something "wrong."

I'm still seeing a doctor (a specialist to the specialist that I demanded to see) with a new appointment in early January. I actually wonder if I even have IBS as I do not have any pain or bloating which has been pointed out to me as being a must to earn an IBS diagnosis - just urgent bowel movements. Although I've had a stool test done for giardiasis, I'm going to bring it up with this doctor as I've read an article Giardiasis that has me questioning how in depth the testing at my local hospital was.
