Have many here eliminated many of their IBS symptoms going on a gluten free diet? (m)

My friend who suffers with IBS and many other GI issues tested positive for gluten allergies and since going gluten free, has pretty much been free of IBS. I never thought I was sensitive to wheat products and such but now am beginning to think there is something up. Previous foods that seemed safe for me, after eating now, are causing me to have gas, needing to go to the bathroom (not D but just need to go quite often) and that unsettled feeling. I enjoy so many foods with gluten and am quite thin and can't afford to lose weight. My friend lost quite a bit going on this diet. Just curious to how many are gluten intolerant besides IBS or are do they kind of go hand in hand sometimes.
Thanks!

If you think you may have problems with gluten then ask your GI doctor for a blood test or endoscopy for celiacs disease. Have you been tested for fructose malabsorption?

I haven't been tested for that. Can that produce those symptoms?

Does a GI doctor do those tests? I know my friend went to a nutritionist but not sure if insurance will cover that.

A GP or GI doc can order the tests.

I did 6 weeks gluten free before I finally broke down, accepted IBS as my diagnosis, and started following the EFI diet. I saw little to no change in eliminating gluten. My blood work also showed no wheat allergy, and no markers for Celiac. I, like you, had heard of other people having success with eliminating gluten, though, so I gave it a shot. At least I know that that's not what my problem is, though

Its interesting, about a year ago I was in the almost exact same boat

I was a 17 year old male, about 135 pounds at 5'10. I was advised by some doctors who thought I was underweight to load up on calories, which led me to eat way too many cabs, including wheat products, as well as sugary-juice and products.
I didn't see immediately effects of gluten products, but I was often very gassy

Anyway, I switched to a new doctor, made a lot of lifestyle and diet chances, and have improved since. I still have work to do, but I think theres a fair chance the GF diet helped. You don't have to have celiac to benefit from going off gluten

I would try giving it a shot for a few weeks/months. It will be really difficult to find enough food at first, but within a month, you should not even miss wheat. My advice would be to stay away from GF imitation bread loaves. I usually eat corn, quinoa, potatos, and rice for grains in my diet. Good luck!
