tests for IBS

I'm sure this has probably been talked about before but I can't seem to find it. I was wondering if anyone has been through the IgG food sensitivity test and the Genova Microbiology test. Have they been helpful? Thanks

Check the article on Bogus Tests on the Science-Base medicine web site where they talk about Genova Diagnostics and the Commercial Laboratory Hall of Shame.
If you think you have food allergies or sensitivities then ask you doctor for a referral to a food allergist who may or may not use IgG tests. Apparently often food elimination diets while more time consuming may be more reliable than IgG tests which it can be useful at times.

I have an appointment with my doc next month and I was going to ask to have an IgG done. It just keeps coming up as I hear people (other doctors on webinars I listen to for work) talk about IBS. It also would indicate the presence of leaky gut if the test came back with lots of sensitivities. I don't know if my doc will do it, but I'm going to at least try. My grandma found out she's not supposed to eat summer squash because of this test and when she eliminated it from her diet, she started feeling better. Plus, from what I understand, it can take up to 3 days for your body to respond to a sensitivity (vs. immediately for an allergy) so it's almost impossible to detect through food diaries because it's so time consuming to do all the elimination part of it.

Just fyi, but its not a test for IBS because IBS isn't caused by a food allergy. Syl is right ask a certified allergist.

Inappropriate use of Conventional Testing
Adverse consequences may also arise if conventional laboratory tests are used in inappropriate clinical situations, or where results are presented in a manner amenable to misinterpretation.
Food specific IgG, IgG4
Use: Diagnosis of food sensitivity / allergy.
Method: Antibodies to food are measured using standard laboratory techniques.
Evidence: Level II
Comment: IgG antibodies to food are commonly detectable in healthy adult patients and children, independent of the presence of absence of food-related symptoms. There is no credible evidence that measuring IgG antibodies is useful for diagnosing food allergy or intolerance, nor that IgG antibodies cause symptoms. In fact, IgG antibodies reflect exposure to allergen but not the presence of disease. The exception is that gliadin IgG antibodies are sometimes useful in monitoring adherence to a gluten-free diet patients with histologically confirmed coeliac disease. Otherwise, inappropriate use of food allergy testing (or misinterpretation of results) in patients with inhalant allergy, for example, may lead to inappropriate and unnecessary dietary restrictions, with particular nutritional implications in children. Despite studies showing the uselessness of this technique, it continues to be promoted in the community, even for diagnosing disorders for which no evidence of immune system involvement exists.

I was just about to start a thread about IgG tests.
Has anybody here taken it?
What is your experience...and do you feel it is effective?
Does insurance cover it?
I read an article by Dr. Mark Hyman who recommended it and was considering it myself.

I disagree Shawn. There are many studies out there showing IgG is the best test to get done.
I have been following the EFI diet for years and still suffer.
I recently spoke to an RD who recommended the IgG because unlike the IgE by allergists this detects intolerances that react much later (up to 3 days) and not as severe (constipation as opposed to hives/death).
Are we supposed to just keep suffering?

did you ever get these done alisonmary? i just got my results back and the genova microbiology said i had no growth for lactobacillus species (one of the good bacterias), too low of bifidobacterium (good guy) and too much of psudomonas aerugiona bacteria (a bad guy). my ND is putting me on "HLC intensive probiotics" for 3 months and she said she could give me antibiotics for the bad guy but doesn't really like to or something. i guess theres natural herbs that could possibly treat it like oregano and some other ones ive never heard of.
