I have taken Elavil in the past to try to control weekly migraines. This last time I took it for a year and was on 10mg. It had the added benefit of helping me sleep at night and helped my IBSD, nausea and anxiety. It did make me feel better. Just be aware that it may increase your appetite.

I have just recently stopped taking it because the major side effect for me was weight gain. I felt hungry all the time and craved sweets constantly. When I say crave I mean a craving that I did not have the willpower to ignore.

I have a friend who takes Elavil for sleep problems and she doesn't have the cravings for sweets and has not had weight gain.

I did feel very, very sleepy in the mornings but that went away after a week or two.

Good Luck!

Ditto what Janey said.
I too have been on it in the past for FM issues.
Works well for sleep and anxiety issues.
Can give you that groggy AM feeling til you get used to it but then that goes away.
One of the more common side effects is constipation.
And one of the even more common side effects is change in appetite. So beware if that is an issue for you. It was not for me.

Really, just like everything else....we all need to find out what works for us, as we are all so dang different!!

Oh boy, I just got my rx for Elavil today.
It's 25 mg.

I have IBS-C with bad bloating.

Do you guys agree with the MD that this might help my symptoms?
I am worried about AM grogginess, weight gain, and sugar cravings.

I didn't have the weight gain or cravings.
I did have the morning groggies for about a week until my system adjusted and then it was fine.

Didn't do a thing for the IBS issues but did help me sleep which is what it was Rx for at the time for me, for an FM related sleep disorder.

my dr wanted me to take elavil to help me gain weight. i chose not to take it after reading the side effects. i'm not depressed when i don't have a bad ibs day so that's why i don't want an anti depressant. i choose to take 1/2 a valium only occasionally though when i'm really anxious...

I was just prescribed a low dose (10 mg) by a neurologist for headaches, but I'm not sure when I will begin to take it. I'm already on Zoloft, and my psychiatrist said that she will have to talk to the neurologist, because I should not be taking two antidepressants

For me, it seems perfect. I could stand to gain a few pounds and sleep better, two of the side effects, in addition to helping my headaches and hopefully IBS

Just took my first pill last night, which was 25 mgs.
Slept really nice BUT I feel groggy today AND I feel quite backed up.
I'm mulling if I should try it again or if one night was enough.
This was supposed to help with IBS-C and instead has made it worse today, so I'm leaning towards 1 and done.

There is no way your system is going to get accustomed to this med in just one day.
The grogginess is a normal side effect and can take a week for it to even out.
As for the IBS-C issues.....don't know
