An RD had recommended to me trying prune juice when I feel backed up...what do you think...I haven't seen this referenced much by Heather.

Prune juice contains sorbitol which is fairly strong laxative and GI stimulant. Sorbitol can exacerbate IBS symptoms. Best to stick with a stool softener like colace.

Colace doesn't have IBS risks itself?

Nope - many people on the board have used colace ((docusate sodium). I take when I travel even though I have IBS-D. When I travel through many time zones I become IBS-C for a few days.

I must chime in and say colace has done a WORLD of good for my IBS-A. I was always afraid to try it (we're talking years of misery!!) but when I got so sick this summer my GI doc insisted I try it. I take 2 a night and am the most stable I have ever been!!

I've tried eating a few prunes at night and I think it is helping. Doesn't give me gas or pain..and I like how they taste. Better than the juice...although probably not as effective. Let me know if you try this.

I feel stool softeners are a good occasional back up plan but nothing should be taken on regular basis. The colon needs to work on its own. I take stool softeners or Phillips chews when needed (couple times a year). Hot tea and a healthy diet are better for day to day use.

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

I agree, LM, but it certainly wouldn't work for me. We have to keep in mind each body is different. People with IBS-C take miralax all of the time--colace is similar to the body for regular use. I only began using colace after severe cycles of C.
Colace doesn't affect the movement of the colon anyway. It just softens the stool making it easier to pass. There is a colace with a stimulant laxative, but I am certainly not recommending that one!

Prune juice or prunes cause me alot of bloating and gas. It's one of the few things that I can say for sure will cause me an attack.

Magnesium citate works wonders for IBS-C!! I use it daily. I went from having a BM every 2-3 days, to having one now twice a day. No cramps or diarrhea. Just easy comfortable BMs. I love it!! It also helps with gas and bloating...promise!!

Wow! You consider having a BM every 2-3 days C? I would consider that Heaven. I can only dream. Try a BM every 10-15 days, and that is with help.

Fancymom, is this a liquid or a pill? Where do you get it from and how much do you take? Thanks

Yes. I definitely considered it IBS-C, since it was only about 4 tiny, hard rabbit pellets. And I always looked 6 months pregnant!

Every 10-15 days?? I think I would be in the ER. You poor thing! That is total misery.

Hi Cyndy.
It is just the mineral - Magnesium. It is a pill. I buy it in the form of Magnesium citrate because that is the easiest for our bodies to absorb. I like it because our bodies need it anyway. In fact, I did some research and found that over 70% of people in the US are magnesium deficient. It has really helped me with my constipation!! Also, you can try Vitamin C. That really helps too!!

Good luck -

Thanks fancymom. At first I thought you were talking about that liquid crap they make you drink before a colonoscopy. The green bottle gunck.

how many milligrams of magnesium do you take a day? I'm using 3 tsp of natual calm magnesium and it does help. I'm also on Mirilax too, though!

LOL! Oh my...I would never recommend something so nasty

I used to take natural calm, but I didn't like the taste, and it didn't seem to work very well for me. I take about 600mg/day of Mag Citrate. Some days a little more, some days a little less. Depending on how gassy and constipated I am...

1) Should I avoid prune juice?
-I found one at the store today by Sunsweet
-It says it is 100% Prune Juice, no preservatives, no added sugar, or anything artifical....safe?

2) I take Miralax, does colace or mag citrate work better?
-Can I take both or all 3 together?
