I have not heard of a probiotic that was clinically tested for IBS causing C. What probiotic were you taking that caused C?

Thanks for the post. I've been feeling alot better for the last 24 to 36 hours.

I haven't done a ton of research on it, but I haven't found anywhere that says C can be a symptom of fructose malabsorption; it must be somewhat rare. I've so seriously limited my diet already that I won't have very much to eat if I dump the fruit. I do know that grapes are very bad for me--I've never felt well after eating them. It was interesting to note in this article on fructose malabsorption, Fructose Malabsorption – Causes, Symptoms, and Diagnosis, that the human intestine can only absorb a certain amount of fructose at any one time (25 to 50 g), and the severity of fructose malabsorption is a matter of degree. So even a person that normally has no digestive issues could have a big problem if they gorged on foods containing fructose. Maybe I hit my limit by adding the Vit C fizzy powder, which has alot of fructose in it (the citric acid could have cause a problem, too). I do normally avoid anything with corn syrup, esp. high fructose corn syrup. One more food to limit and/or to be worried about.

Glad to hear you are feeling better.

It is a common misconception that fructose malabsorption occurs only in IBS-D. A recent clinical study up to 50% of IBS-C and IBS-D have fructose malabsorption (See reference below). I have replicated the table from the study in this posting and provided a detailed explanation in these two postings ( posting 1 and posting 2 )

While normal individuals can absorb 25 to 60 grams or so of excess fructose in the small intesting an individual with fructose malabsorption may only be able to absorb a few grams. I have fructose malabsorption and I can only handle a couple of grams of excess fructose. A small apple or pear contains about 5 grams of excess fructose and a tablespoon of honey can contain 3 grams. So individuals with fructose issues have to be careful so as not to trigger IBS symptoms from some common foods with excess fructose.

One way it is thought that fructose malabsorption affects individuals with IBS-C is that the excess fructose that is not absorbed reaches the colon where it acts like fast food for the colonic bacteria. During the fermentation process fructose is converted to byproducts and gases such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen and methane. Over the past decade it has been found that as the concentration of methane in the colon increases the degree of constipation increases. There are suggestions now that this characteristic might be used as a bio-marker to distinguish IBS-C from other subtypes (see reference below).

There is a link in my signature to an excellent detailed discussion on fructose malabsorption and IBS along with some dietary guidelines.

HI Syl.
I have tried Udo's, and just soy yogurt. They both constipated me worse. Also, I tried Align. That didn't make it worse, just didn't help.

I take fibercon, and really like it. I tried Metamucil and it blew my belly up like the goodyear blimp, and then tried citrucel and I had horrible cramps and diarrhea. Fibercon is great! Of course, everybody is different.

Sounds like you are taking a lot of different things at once. It may be hard to pinpoint what the trigger/triggers are until you eliminate taking everything for a few days, then try adding them back one at a time.

Good Luck!

How much fibercon do you take a day? Have you ever tried Acacia? I thought I had tried them all, but I haven't tried fibercon yet. I thought it had calcium in it which is binding. Maybe I'm wrong. I don't remember anymore, this IBS has made me so confused! It sounds like you are doing really well and have found a diet/supplements that help you!
