My doctor (psy) has recommended I take 9 MG (3 pills) of Melotonin at night to help with sleep.
I have to be on medicine, and it is believed some of them are disrupting sleep.
Problem is when I try melotonin, it seems to back me up.

Somebody also recommended to me, since I weight train, I take ZMA which is supposed to be great for sleep.
I wanted to know if any could tell me:

1) Is it possible that Melotonin can be problematic for IBS-C and bloating?
-Does brand/make matter?

2) What about ZMA? How good is ZMA for sleep, how effective is it relative to Melotonin?
-What about side effects, specific to C, is it more or less problematic?
-Again, does brand matter?

3) Which do you recommend I try?

Thanks!

There is a study that show melatonin may increase colonic transit time in those with IBS-C. So it might back you up.

One thing I have found is that many melatonin supplements contain other ingredients that may be problematic. In particular the sublingual melatonin can be a problem. Look for a melatonin supplement that only contains melatonin perhaps with rice flour as a filler and in a gelatin capsule. I don't know of a good brand name in the US.

Another research study showed that melatonin had little effect on the sleep characteristics for individuals with IBS. It used 3 mg per night.

ZMA is a supplement used by bodybuilders and athletes containing zinc, magnesium, and Vitamin B-6. I don't recall seeing anything that might indicate it is good for sleep. I believe it is believe it might help anabolism however, I believe this claim has not been supported by research. I have seen some informal claims that ZMA can produce weird dreams which some claim to be due to the Vitamin B-6.

What medicines do you think are causing sleep problems? I presume you know that sleep difficulties are quite common with IBS.

Thanks Syl, as always!!!!!!
I know the meds I take cause the sleep issues, no doubt, but I have to be on them, private matter.

The melatonin I have is from Walgreens.

Ingredients: Dicalcium Phosphate, microcrystal cellulose, stearic acid, pryidoxine hydrochloride, silicon dioxide, magnesium sterate, melatonin.

1) Any of those strike you as problematic?
2) So just get one that has only rice flour as a filler?
-Does that likely only get carried at a health store?

3) You think this product
NOW

I cannot figure out why the Walgreen's brand has pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B-6) which is known to cause wierd dreams

I take the NOW brand. It only contains a rice flour filler and it is delivered in a gelatin cap.

Do you think any of the ingredients in the walgreens brand could be causing IBS-C and other issues and do you think the NOW really would be any different IBS wise?

Well - the vitamin B-6 in Walgreen's doesn't help sleep and it may in fact inhibit it or at least produce weird dreams.

As I mentioned in the first email melatonin itself may increase your C.

Personally, I stay away from all supplements that have unnecessary ingredients because I have been fooled to many times thinking that an ingredient is safe. If I don't know what the ingredient is or why it is the supplement I don't buy it. Better safe than sorry

Syl....what do you know about ZMA?
I took it last...felt good.

The product I have contains as the ingredients:
Gelatin, rice flour, magnesium stearate, water.

Is this likely safe for IBS and not likely to cause added problems?
What about the magnesium sterate...safe?
Thanks!

I made a few comments about ZMA in my first response. Some users of ZMA claim it gives them wierd dreams because of the high vitamin B-6 concentration in the product.

Magnesium stearate should be fine.

I currently take, and need, for anxiety+OCD

Depakote-1500 mg
Luvox-100 mg (really should be 150 or more)
and just re-started gabitril-2 mg

My sleep sux...I need help getting to sleep and I never get a straight sleep. I have constant interruptions during my sleep.

We used to have Luvox at 200 and gab at 8...helped anxiety and ocd...but sleep was terrible.
Had luvox down to 50 with no gab...and was on trazodone at 12.5-25 mg to help with sleep.
Was better, I could sleep, but still had constant interruptions, morning grogginess.

I've been on ambien (which wore off).

I now am on 12.5 of traz plus just started 3 pills of ZMA per night.
I think the ZMA might be giving me C.

I feel helpless.

I would feel helpless too if I had to take that many meds.

Say - I read that constipation is a side effect of Depakote and Luvox. Could they be part of the increase C you are experiencing?

My constipation is no worse than prior to going on those meds.

Syl...I wanted your opinion.
My doctor has recommend that for sleep, once again, I do between 6-9 mg of melotonin per night.
She feels this is the best way to get my sleep right again.

I wanted to know
1) Do you think that melotonin and in this dosage is safe for IBS?
-Will it be likely to be irritating or not?

2) Which brand do you recommend? I recall you saying NOW is good, but they sell only online. I never see it at VitaminShoppe or Whole Foods/Wal Mart/CVS/Wal Greens.

I have seen sourcenaturals and spring valley.
I wanted to know, are these brands melotonin, posted below, safe or do they contain bad ingredients?

sourenaturals ingredients:
Quote:

dibasic calcium phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose, cellulose acetate, stearic acid, colloidal silicon dioxide, and magnesium stearate.

spring valley ingredients
Quote:

Melatonin. Other: Dibasic Calcium Phosphate, Sodium Starch Glycolate, Magnesium Stearate.

Basically, before I go out and buy, try melotonin I wanted to make sure you feel this is not going to irritate IBS in this dosage nor for any of these particular brands.

Melatonin may or may not increase C. Studies of melatonin on IBS suffers show that it affects GI motility and it is not effective for managing sleep distrubances.

I would try the Spring Valley version.

Other Ingredients: Dicalcium Phosphate, Vegetable Cullulose, Vegetbale Magnesium Sterate, Silica.

Does this sound ingredient wise ok to you?
Thanks!
