I have IBS-C and my doctor told me to eat a high fiber low-fat diet and take 1 tablespoon of Metamucil everyday and drink 6-8 glasses of water daily. I don't eat right, hardly no veges or fruit. What does everyone else eat with IBS-C. How do you get your veges and fruits in daily?

This is the standard recommendation from doctors for people with IBS-C. It shows how little they understand about the syndrome, and it frustrates me to no end.

The thing that has seemingly 'cured' me of constipation is Heather's acacia fiber. Unlike metamucil and citrucel, it contains no artificial ingredients, and it's also organic. I started with a 1/2 teaspoon twice a day and increased my dose by a 1/2 teaspoon every 4-5 days until reaching my maintenance dose of 2 tablespoons twice a day. I have had a BM every day for the last 2 months, which is nothing short of miraculous for me.

Unfortunately, even though I have a BM every day, I still experience all of my IBS symptoms, which I am still struggling to stabilize. I don't get enough fruits and veggies either - there are very few I tolerate well. I eat blueberries in my oatmeal, avocado on my turkey sandwich, carrots, potatoes, mushrooms, celery, green beans, and peas in soup. Occasionally I also have half a peeled apple with lunch. And that's about it for me. I also take a daily multi-vitamin to cover my nutritional needs since my diet is lacking.

Otherwise, I eat oatmeal, sourdough bread, egg whites, corn and rice cereals, chicken breast, turkey breast, fish, shrimp, crab, rice, pasta, and homemade, low fat, dairy-free baked goods.

I've realized recently that my IBS symptoms are much more related to stress, anxiety, and childhood trauma than foods that I eat. I highly recommend to everyone that they read "The Divided Mind" by Dr. John Sarno. The book discusses how syndromes such as IBS and chronic pain are the result of unconscious emotional pain in our minds. I don't seem to be feeling better, even after carefully adhering to the EFI diet for 3 1/2 months. I believe Dr. Sarno's theory explains my symptoms really well. Addressing the emotional pain is the next step - easier said than done.

I find it very hard to eat fruits and veggies since I have the worse gas cramps and constipation ever.Lat night for example I hardly slept since I haven't went to the bathroom for days. I can do raw veggies and fruits so everything has to be cooked. Here 's what I do I will eat boiled veggies with white rice, eat salsa ( after I boiled it on the stove ) with baked potato chips, eat jam that contains over (50% fruits and has little sugar)with sliced bananas and chocolate soy pudding ( I make my own and I use soy milk made with soy protein only so I don't get even worse gas cramps), I also eat blueberry and raisin bagels, eat plain white pasta with pasta sauce that is made with lots of veggies, stuff like that. I always eat Beano tablets too with meals which helps a little. There's also Bean zyme which is way better than Beano since it's half the price and vegan. I can't find it where I live though since I live in the middle of no where.

IBS-C takes a long time to stabilize with. I spent a good year on it. And I felt worse before I felt better. It's a rollercoaster, but well worth the effort in the end.

Natural Calm is fantastic for C. It's non-addicting and contains no stimulants, so it's easier on your body than Milk of Magnesia and you can use it daily. You can buy it at Whole Foods or order it online. There's tons of posts on here about it, so do a search.

As for your fruits and veggies: cook, puree, blend, all of the above! I ate a lot of blended soups and fruit smoothies early on. It's the easiest and safest way to get those foods, which we C'ers need a lot of.

Have you tried hypnosis? I did it 2 or 3 times and saw vast improvements each time.

Good luck!

Thank you for the tip. I will try that. I am just frustrated. I have been this way for years and I am really getting tired of it.
