Hi! I'm a new member here and found this thread very helpful. Thanks so much. I agree that eating out can be challenging. What I'm doing currently is checking the menu for whatever restaurant I'm going to online before I get there, so I can plan my dinner options. If they don't have anything I can eat there...I simply don't go. My friends and family love me enough to know that if I ask to go somewhere else there MUST be a good reason. If your kids want to go to McD's - take them! Get the grilled chicken wrap without the dressing and lettuce. Or maybe you can handle lettuce? Check out their menu online. Make it work for you!!! Good luck.

Oh look another crabby patty who doesn't like to be told how it is. I remember when Naturapanic jumped down my throat when I said all caffeine drinks were unsafe.

The fact is that it is very difficult to be sure everything you are eating from a restaurant or at a friend's is safe! At restaurants they sneak in lots of oil and butter, some nasty seasonings like MSG or kitchen bouquet etc, sometimes lard, Mc D was putting beef juice on their fries on the sly. I'm sorry you don't like to cook and you are having a pity party b/c you can't eat like you used to. But thems the breaks! be careful eating out often; take pep caps before; don't rely on out meals to give you nutrition or fiber; don't get pop or coffee drinks no matter how tempting; watch the fat amount and IF amount. Also don't go against advice all pissy-like and come crying that you aren't stable. There is nothing worse than that!
It isn't ridiculous to prepare food for ourselves, maybe it isn't the modern American way but it won't kill you to make a meal and bring leftovers for work. Or just get an Amy's meal or something like that instead of a restaurant all the time. A lot of people are eating out less to cut excess calories and to save money. Just think of the money you would save by packing a lunch.

Nobody's asking you to sacrifice your life.

The truth of the matter it is difficult for many of us to go out to eat because our guts just are not stable enough to do that. It's hard to enjoy and evening out when your bowels are screaming at you to find a bathroom NOW. Been there, done that.

For example, when my IBS was really, really bad, I could hardly handle the drive to work, and it was only 10 minutes in reasonable traffic. I didn't go out to eat much at all for about 4 months, either, because I just could not handle it. Over time, it got better. By the end of that first year, I was able to go out to eat once or twice a week, but I was still very careful. Five years later, I'm happy to say I can go out to a restaurant and just about anything except beef or cheese, but it didn't happen overnight.

You don't HAVE to stay home and "cook, cook, cook," as you say, but if your IBS is not stable, you will have to tweak your lifestyle a little bit. That may mean eating at home a little more often or carrying a safe snack with you when you're away from home for more than a couple hours.

I never have been much of a drinker, so I can't speak to that part very well. However, I have tweaked the diet to my own tolerances, which I won't go into right now because they don't follow the IBS diet guidelines. IBS does not get better overnight, but give the diet a shot and see if it works for you.

You must be Naturapanic reincarnated. I am not telling you to do anything and certainly not to sacrifice your life. Wah. These mid 20's folks are so dramatic. If you are not stable eating out all the time and you want to be stable then something has to change. I never said you can never eat out - I did give suggestions on how to do it more safely. You really go to a fastfood restaurant every two hours? Can't you throw some food in a bag that you could snack on like the rest of us and then make yourself some dinner? Gee whiz.

Look, I was trying to be nice instead of snarky like some other responses from long-time users of this board.

You come off like you think you're the only person who has been affected by IBS and as if nobody else has suffered from IBS. Guess what? You're not. We all have this annoying, intrusive disorder that can and does disrupt life, some to a greater degree than others. I am truly sorry it has greatly disrupted your life, but I don't understand why you yell and scream at the people who are trying to help you. If the IBS diet is not working for you, go, try something else. No one's stopping you.

I spoke to you like a newbie because with only 30 post under your current handle, I thought you were a newbie. I was trying to be helpful and not to speak in a condescending tone.

The IBS diet does not work for everybody. It obviously does not work for you, so why do you continue to hang around!?
