irritation shown on colonoscopy

Hi!
I posted this on the living room but thought I might get more answers over here. I recently had a colonoscopy and the doc said it showed irritation and just didn't look good. She took biopsies to see if perhaps it is colitis. However, after reading the symptoms of colitis, I'm doubtful. Has anyone ever had irritation on their colonoscopies that lead your doc to say it's IBS or do you have to have a normal healthly looking colon in order to get diagnosed with IBS? I'm unsure of this one...
I'll find out the results of the biopsies next week.

Generally speaking with IBS a colonoscopy looks normal. IBS is a syndrome with no visible or other detectable GI problems. You will have to wait until your biospy comes back before you will have any clues as to what might be the problem.
You might check out the symptoms of IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) of which colitis is one example.

Hi,
I figured you meants IBD. I guess all I can do is just wait and see what the doc says. It's very strange and a bit scary to think it could be an IBD...so we'll wait and see,

You say you have "irritation" I have ulcerative colitis and ulcers showed up on colonscopy and I better not "irritate" them with unsafe foods. Talk to GI specialist...

Diagnosed mild to moderate Ulcerative Colitis September 2009. Was D. Now managing C. No physical complaints since on Heather's diet and products. Hoping D won't return with tapering down of predisone.

Yeah, the doc said it didn't look like UC, but could be another type of colitis. (I'm assuming she said this bc it only showed red and irritated, no ulcers)
I'll see what she has to say next week.

Oh, I am sorry for the Colitis. Do you have any idea what foods are giving you the issues? It's probably hard to tell at times. Can a food irritate the colon and not bother the gut? If that is the case, it will be tough to figure out the foods you would want to avoid. You know with IBS, the gut hollers first.

I wonder if it could be Granulomatous Colitis, which is a type of Crohn's that affects the large intestine. It was my understanding that GC usually shows ulcers though. Then again, I'm not a doctor.

So I called the office and the nurse was able to tell me there were no pathological changes (aka no colitis) so that's good I guess.
I'm waiting to hear what the doc says when she reviews it b/c the nurse did say there were a few notes included on the results that she cannot interpret. Interesting...
I just seem to be a mystery... I can never fit into a mold even though the doc thought it was colitis. I am thankful not to have it, but sometimes all you want is an answer..ya know?

I heard from the doc this morning. The biopsies were all negative, so there is no colitis or chrons. What it did show was "non-specific mucosal hemmorages"...which apparently is just no big deal. I asked the nurse what that means and what I should do about it and she didn't have any answers. The doc wanted to know how my symptoms are... and considering it's been a week since my colonoscopy and I still haven't had a BM, I'd say not so great. BLECH. Not a fun time right now for me... I'm glad it's nothing serious, but I wish there was something I could do to stop these hemmorages.

That's not a very satisfying explanation for what your doctor saw in your colon. I'm so tired of doctors not spending the time (or lacking the knowledge) they need to to help you feel better. If you can afford it, I recommend finding a naturopathic doctor. With the information from your colonoscopy, plus any lab results you have, you can spend a couple hours talking to an ND about your symptoms from top to bottom and inside and out. The ND will be able to use all the test results and your symptoms to treat you holistically.
For inflammation in your body I've been told Omega-3 capsules work wonders for that. I have trouble taking these because I have intensely bad heartburn and they make it worse, but if that's not a problem for you, then it's something to look into.
I'm sorry that your doctor seems to offer so little help. Don't give up, there are alternative treatment options available.

my colonoscopy showed inflammation and redness, bleeding and I was diagnosed with microscopic colitis, different from ulcerative colitis. Following similar treatments to those for IBS has helped me. Sometimes though it seems that my system is irritated and it doesnt matter what I eat that could set it off. Hope you get more answers
