I've only been taking it for 5 days and I'm not sure if I will stay on it or not. I am going to Disney in a week, and was having trouble just going too much, (mornings being the worst) and didn't want to put a damper on the trip with my family. He said it's probably just temporary. I've done research on it and it seems to be prescribed mostly for those who have had their gallbladder taken out. It helps with bile in the gallbladder that can cause D. It is primarily a cholesterol lowering drug. I dont' have problems with that but it seems a lot of IBS-D people take it. I've also noticed a lot of people having side effects from it and am watching closely for that. I would rather just rely on good old fashioned Imodium than to be on a drug but we'll see how it goes. I want to give it a chance. I also have really been careful with my diet. It's harder when you're eating out all the time (Disney) but will be careful with what I order.

Anyone else try Welchol? I orignally asked for Lotronex but the nurse said it was very similar to Lomotil. I thought there were different.

Lotronex is definitely different than Lomotil. It works in a completely different fashion than lomotil. Lotronex acts on seritonin receptors in the gut while lomotil contains an anti-diarrheal drug and atropine an anticholinergic drug. However, in order for you doctor to prescribe Lotronex s/he must be enrolled in a special program because the drug can have serious side effects. You can read about it on the Lotronex web site.

Welchol is usually prescribed for IBS-like symptoms caused by excess bile production. Has your doctor confirmed you have gall bladder problems?

As far as I know, I have no gallbladder issues. I guess some who don't have gb issues have still taken it for help with D but I am calling my doc today. I don't want to be on something that is for something else and has so many side effects plus I am supposed to take it 3 times a day! My biggest problem is urgency. Not so much D that much but when I have to go....well you know. It's volume more than D. I already have lomotil for as needed but try to avoid taking it. I do imodium for the most part.
