My Sedimentation Rate

My complete blood count was normal, but my sedimentation rate was 31. The nurse and dr both said that it is very slightly elevated (I see normal max is 20) and that so many factors can elevate it that a slight amount is nothing to be concerned with. I did just finish menstruating 2 days previous and she said that could definitely be why. I'm still concerned. Should I be? (I am not bashing doctors - I just have a mom who was told she didnt have cancer two seperate times and was diagnosed 6 months later than she should have been)

I'm sorry, but what is sedimentation rate? Just curious

Sorry to hear about your mom. Doctor's aren't always right and definitely aren't the smartest people in the world! I am bashing on Dr.s a little. My first GI was a dummy!

Well I've had cancer and even when I was being diagnosed my sed rate was not high. It just goes to show you that numbers are different for everyone. So, try not to worry too much about it. Unless you are experiencing any symptoms (I'm assuming you aren't), then this try to trust what the doc says.

The sedimentation rate (sed rate) blood test measures how quickly red blood cells (erythrocytes) settle in a test tube. High sedimentation rates may be caused by:

* Autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus or rheumatoid arthritis.
* Cancer, such as lymphoma or multiple myeloma.
* Chronic kidney disease.
* Infection, such as pneumonia, pelvic inflammatory disease, or appendicitis.
* Inflammation of joints (such as polymyalgia rheumatica) and blood vessels (such as giant cell arteritis).
* Inflammation of the thyroid gland (Graves' disease).
* Kidney, bone, joint, skin, or heart valve infections.
* Pregnancy and preeclampsia (toxemia of pregnancy).
* Viral infections.

A high sedimentation rate is caused by almost any kind of inflammation including a cold, minor virus, etc. Wiki has a fairly good write-up. Although it is frequently order by physicians alone the test seems to be of limited diagnostic value.
