How soon after eating a trigger food do you get pain?

I've been doing a food diary to try to figure out my triggers - eating from the 'breaking the cycle' diet feels wonderful, but within a couple of days of trying to add other 'safe' foods I get pain and bloating. What I can't tell, though, is whether the pain is related to what I've just eaten or if it was something from yesterday or even the day before. It all seems so random to me!

Sometimes right away sometimes a few days later.
try only adding one new thing a week.that way you can pinpoint what is the trigger.

maybe post what you are eating everyone is different and some safe foods aren't safe for all of us.

I have kept a diary for years and know that if I eat the wrong thing (too much fiber usually) I will have pressure/pain and bloating within 20 mins.

Yuck !

Thanks to both of you for taking the time to answer me. I've managed to figure out that there are three separate things that cause my pain - constipation, lactose and 'something else'. The lactose can take up to 36 hours to have symptoms, but the 'something else' seems to be almost right away. I'm back on the intervention diet today, so once I'm pain free I'll take it slower when I bring in other foods. I'm so impatient, I keep going too fast!!

Usually a problem food will pass 36 to 48 hours after. All foods are different though, for instance, Orange Juice - to the best of my memory as it's been well over ten years since having any, will hit me within eight hours. Spaghetti Sauce, another problem for me about 24 to 36 hours, and Chocolate Chip cookies - a big problem and very hard to resist - about 48 hours or longer. Keep at it and God Bless.

Best,

James

I agree. If I eat an apple then I know it right away. Other things - foods that cause attacks take a couple of days.

at times I can't even finish the meal I'm eating if there's a trigger in it. Most of the time my attacks hit within half hour of eating and last a couple hours to a couple rough days. Fortunately I'm much better than I was in 2006 - 2007. My attacks are much less frequent but still can be severly dibilitating.

Wishing you happy tummy days!!

I generally can not finish a meal that contains a trigger food. If I take a Bentyl before the meal, I can make it about 20 minutes after the meal. For some foods, dairy especially, I just get pain constantly (for days) after eating.

I hear ya! I always do to fast as well! I notice for example that if I eat a piece of cheesecake today, then something I eat wednesday will trigger the cheesecake and my colon to go haywire! It's usually too much IF that triggers the 'attack' or too much fat. Does that make sense?

Well, I never thought of that!! I read in a nutrition journal today that symptoms of lactose intolerance willl happen between 20 minutes and 3 hours after eating something with lactose in it. But that didn't explain why sometimes it seems to take a couple of days. Thanks for the explanation - I'll have to think again about what's happening for me.

Congrats on your wedding!!
