Bread: friend or foe?

Does anyone else find that white bread effects them in unpredictable ways? I eat a lot of fresh white bread rolls and sometimes i do fine with them, sometimes they make me feel yucky and bloated. I don't know why this is - maybe i just have to put it down to the randomness of IBS. I did once post about intending to give up wheat but i haven't managed to do it - the bread rolls are just really convenient as theoretically they're safe and i can always buy when i'm out and about and haven't got any food with me (I'm too disorganised to always have preprepared IBS safe food on hand to take out with me!) I'm not sure what I could replace them with. Let me know you bread-related thoughts!

I still eat my wheat bread. I can't stand the gummy feel of regular white bread. I just make sure to have a SF buffer with wheat.

I avoid white breads as I think they tend to constipate and bloat me. But that's me.

I do not eat any bread (except my pumpkin bread on saturdays and fridays ...it's my treat for a week eating well) It is very easy to overeat white breads, as they are nutritionally void your body never really gets full cause it keeps looking for nutrients to cease the hunger. If you overeat on bread (even slightly) it is a highly inflammatory food...so it will make even your face look puffy. Try a potato instead

Hmm, interesting thoughts, many thanks people! And yet white bread is quite a central part of the IBS diet, so it obviously works for some people. The other thing to be said for it is that it gives me calories, and i think it was probably responsible for finally pushing my weight up to an acceptable level (I was unhealthily underweight for about 5 years). But other than that, i agree, its nutritional value seems pretty low! I'm interested in trying some alternative types of bread made from different grains.
Out of interest, say you were going to be out and about the whole day, shopping at the weekend or whatever, what would you take with you to eat? That's where really bread comes in handy, as you can make sandwiches. I guess I could make little tubs of rice salad or something.

What about the french and sourdough bread that is in Heathers diet? Would that be better than plain white bread or in the same category?

I've had the same problem. I love bread-but-it turns out I'm allergic to wheat and to baker's yeast. So now I am using alternate kinds of flours, and I am going to make some of Heather's fruit & vegetable breads using other flours. I'm new to this whole thing and am hoping it works! You might have your blood tested for food allergies. Good luck!

french and sourdough breads are just as nutritionally void as regular.....stripping of the bran makes whole whaet bread white....making it easier to digest for us, but completely absent of nutrients.....as for what to take when you are out, i usually carry around little pyrex containers of brown rice and cooked fruit, i mix it together when i am hungry. Much more nutritious than bread and more satisfying as well! even take a banana if you dont want to tote around the pyrex

You might find the comparison of white and whole wheat bread on the Princeton University Dining Services web site of interest. It says the following:

False. Although the refined white flour used to make bread may have been stripped of fiber, magnesium, zinc and several other nutrients, at least five nutrients have been added back by enriching the flour with B vitamins (thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, folic acid) and iron. Some white breads offer more of these vitamins than whole wheat breads.

Is brown rice safe for some one with C? When I started this diet I went back to eating white rice of which I had totally discarded from my diet. I was also eating high fiber breads but I felt horrible on them. I do make Heathers french bread and seem to have no problems with it, but what could you add to it, to make it more wholesome?

Brown rice is fine for C. I eat it all the time. I put a little Acacia on it sometimes, but it usually has no affect on my IBS.

It's false that white bread lacks nutrition. Well, Wonder white bread might. But most white breads are enriched, which means the insoluble fiber husk and all the nutrients have been removed but then everything is put back in the bread except for the insoluble fiber. Of course, IF aids in digestion and keeps you satiated longer, but if all you can eat is white bread, you're still getting your nutrients.

Scott yes it is fortified, but our bodies can metabolize vitamins in food easier than artificial sources. Not to mention they are insulin boosting carbs which will spike your blood sugar making you more hungry for the same types of food.....if you have the choice and can tolerate it have whole grain instead.

I totally agree, Rebecca. We didn't even mention that after they strip the bran/germ, the white flour is bleached, (with potassium bromate or chlorine dioxide) to extend the shelf life. I would prefer not to put that into my body...I don't care how many nutrients are "put back" into the bread.

However, I do understand that some people's bellies just cannot tolerate whole wheat bread. So, why put yourself through that pain just to eat "healthy", which obviously for some people, would not be healthy at all.

It is a dilemma, for sure. I was at one time having a sandwich with one slice of sourdough and one slice of wheat berry. It looked strange but it tasted good, and I got no symptoms. But, lately I have just been steering clear of all wheat.

If you don't eat bread, what do you usually have for lunch? I am so used to having a sandwhich every day....I wouldn't know what else to eat!

Bread never fills me up, and when I make a sandwich, for me it's too many carbs and makes me tired for lunch I usually have 3oz organic chicken breast (i use organic spaghetti sauce as a condiment), about 1/2 c cauliflower, and 5oz baked red potato.....that keeps me full for about 3 hrs when i then have my next "mini-meal".

I'd have to agree with the above. When it comes to bread its best to just stay away altogether. I know its conveniant and all but its actually hassle in the long run. I stopped eating bread at the begining of Feb. and its probably been the best move I ever made.

Yes but in the subject line they asked if bread was a friend or foe...hence the responses were given as to show that for many of us it is a foe.....

This has inspired me to start eating brown rice again - i hadn't bought any for ages as i think it gave me some problems in the past but a few days ago i bought a bag of oranic shortgrain rice and am reintroducing it into my diet. I mix it half and half with white rice, and i seem to be doing ok with it so far. I took a tub of it mixed with steamed vegetables for my lunch today, ate it sitting on the river bank in the sun, idyllic!

Usually Natures' Own or Sara Lee. I get the whole grain wheat. It doesn't bother me too much. I feel guilty when I eat white bread, it just seems like I can feel it caking to my stomach! I always make sure to dissolve acacia in some water and drink it before eating the whole grain though. I think I could do ok with out it, but I just like to be careful!
