Just needing some info on what other fibers people have used that has shown improvement with the IBS-D other than Heathers tummy fiber. I have tried this and haven't seen alot of improvement so I thought maybe I just need a different type. Any suggestions would be helpful. I get so lost trying to figure some of this stuff out.

Hi mrae,

Heather did a lot of research to find acacia in an attempt to find the perfect fiber to help address the spectrum of IBS symptoms. Heather has chosen acacia as the soluble fiber of choice for a number of reasons that suit our IBS folks. It is very gentle, not allergenic, and the breakdown products of the acacia produce more of the beneficial short chain fatty acids that are supportive of the intestinal cells. It is also prebiotic meaning it will help to support the balance of good bacteria in your gut because soluble fiber is their preferred food source. Acacia is better tolerated than other fiber sources and really does work the best for IBS based on the feedback from thousands of our customers. We also have a lot of customers who use acacia as a fiber supplement and they don't have IBS at all. If folks with IBS can tolerate acacia because it is so gentle, then it's a safe bet everyone else will have luck with it too.

Taking too much acacia too fast can cause increased gas and bloating. Acacia is one of the lowest gas-forming fibers out there and going slow makes the gas issue totally avoidable. Please be patient because this really does work.

We recommend starting with ½ teaspoon twice a day (daily dose of 1 teaspoon). You can split the daily dose up as many time as you like throughout the day, just divide it by 2 or 3 depending on the frequency you prefer. Try to increase the dose every 4th day or so by a teaspoon (add this to the daily dose). If you get increased gas and bloating by jumping the dose up by a teaspoon, try cutting this in half. Some people with IBS are so sensitive they have to go up at ¼ teaspoons every 4th day. Keep stepping up the dose every 4th day or so until you find a dose that resolves your constipation and/or diarrhea. Constipation is usually resolved with a daily dose of 4-5 tablespoons/day and diarrhea/loose stools usually resolves at a lower dose of 1-3 tablespoons/day. You shouldn't take more than 5 tbsp/day. The maintenance dose is different for each person depending on their specific symptoms. Dietary changes are often necessary to make lasting changes. In the beginning until you stabilize, it works best to take the acacia before each meal to minimize the effect of trigger foods in the meal and to calm the intestines before the food arrives.

Acacia is not a quick fix and needs to be used properly. You can resort to using benefiber, which is also a soluble fiber supplement and made from wheat dextrin. If you are sensitive to wheat at all, this is not the best choice for you.

I hope this helps!
Erin

The dextrin in Benefiber is produced from the hydrolysis or dextrinization of starch derived from wheat to produce a resistant starch. It can also be produced from corn. Wheat dextrin does not have the proteins and other constituents found in wheat. It is gluten free and unlikely to cause problems for individuals who are wheat sensitive.

Thanks for the update! However, I have also heard folks having problems with Benefiber as well. I would recommend trying the acacia first. It is the least gas forming fiber on the market. Your next best bet is Benefiber. Good luck with everything. If you have questions about the acacia or IBS feel free to call us or email help@helpforibs.com. We would be more than happy to help out.

All my best,
Erin

Perhaps it depends on the country in which the Benefiber is purchased. For example, in Canada Benefiber contains inulin -- it use to contain guar gum. Confusing to say the least

You are very welcome. I would just make sure you are increasing your dose by 1/2 teaspoon every fourth day. Diarrhea typically resolves around 3 tablespoons a day. However, everyone is different. If you have any questions you can call or email us at help@helpforibs.com

Best Regards,
Erin

I would love to jump on the bandwagon, if I may.

I seem to be stuck on 4 small tsp a day as every time I try a gradual increase I lose the slight improvements that I have made.

Is it likely to be more beneficial to try 1 Tb a day instead and, if so, would a certain time of the day be preferable to another?

Hi there,

I would try increasing your doses of the acacia in smaller increments and space them out a little more. I would try adding a 1/4 teaspoon to your DAILY dose (not each individual dose) every 5-7 days. This should be very tolerable. You would never want to increase in large increments, as there could be a possibility of causing some excess gas.

Best,
Erin

I am taking Benefiber with no problems. If I change to your product would I need to start out with the small amount that you recommend. I have my IBS pretty much under control.
