Yogurt + lactose intolerance?

~a month ago, I tested positive in a lactose intolerance breath test.
I was told by my dietitian that I should have yogurt, because it has much less lactose than normal milk, and also it has probiotic organisms. I never have had big trouble digesting dairy (but since my IBS I've hardly had any).

So, yesterday, I ate a bowl of vanilla nonfat yogurt with my lunch, and that night got incredibly gassy, the gassiest I can ever remember being in my life. Besides the yogurt, I had a higher than average amount of fruit and acidic food, and can't think of anything besides that which could have set me off.

Can yogurt be harmful for IBS? Should I take a lactate pill before eating it?

Thanks

Heather has mentioned on the site that yogurt CAN have an effect on us, be it the lactose, whey or casein thats in the milk (protiens). I myself have a hard time with 10% or higher milks, and I'm testing to see if yogurt is the problem for my gas through elimination diet.

Here's what Heather says about yogurt and dairy in general (italics hers, color mine):

Quote:

Dairy is an Irritable Bowel Syndrome trigger even if you're not lactose intolerant. It's simply not just the lactose. It's also not just the high fat content of most dairy products that can cause your IBS to flare. Even skim and lactose-free dairy can trigger IBS attacks. In addition to fat and lactose, dairy contains components such as the proteins whey and casein, which can cause severe digestion problems. Though yogurt is traditionally recommended as an "easily digestible" dairy product because fermentation has reduced the lactose levels, even non-fat versions contain whey and casein, and should be avoided.

web page

What this means is that just because yogurt has less lactose than other dairy doesn't make it safe - and a Lactaid won't make it - or any other dairy - safe for IBSers.

The EFI diet suggests removing all dairy products from the diet. There is relatively little clinical evidence to show that anything other than lactose in dairy is a problem for IBSers. However, in 2007 the the British Society of Gastroenterology published a set of guidelines for managing IBS. In the guidelines they say that when a wide range of foods are eliminated from the diet of IBS suffers and then systematically re-introduced the most common intolerances were to dairy and wheat. In contrast, the American College of Gastroenterology task force published guidelines on managing IBS in January of this year and it did not mention that either wheat or dairy can be a problem for IBSers.

It quite possible to have IBS and not be sensitive to dairy. However, the EFI diet takes the approach that since dairy can be a problem for some it recommends that it be removed from your diet. If you want to know for sure if yogurt is a problem for you will have to do some experimenting.

Did you check the ingredients in the vanilla yogurt? Believe it or not some of vanilla, plain and fruit yogurts contain HFCS

dieticians.
Just use soy yogurt or take probiotics.

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

Non-fat yogurt may have artificial sweetener (sucralose or aspartame) in it. Does yours? That would be a big no-no for some.

Apart from dairy actually being the trigger, I ditto the artificial sweetener content. In the US Dannon adds Splenda to it's nonfat yogurts. Splenda can cause gassiness and bloating in lots of people, even people without IBS. So imagine what it can do to you.
