Hello Everyone:

Every time I get a cold I don't know what to do when the doctor says "drink plenty of juice."

With my IBS, I can only tolerate cranberry juice, but it unfortunately triggers my rosacea (a skin rash) so I have had to give it up.

All other juices -- citrus and apple, etc. -- trigger IBS attacks. So, all I've been ever able to have is water or peppermint tea.

Well, I was stuck at home this weekend with a cold and a solution to the juice problem came to me! It is so simple that I actually feel stupid I didn't think of it before!

I bought some bottles of babyfood apple sauce. I like the Beech Nut brand available at Albertson's and Lucky's in the U.S. and Loblaws and Fortinos in Canada.

I put one to two spoonfuls of the sauce in a glass and filled it up the rest of the way with room tempature bottled water. I stirred well. While not exactly "apple juice," it was / is a very good substitute for it! The taste is similar and, best of all, it's safe because the apples are cooked!

I stored the apple sauce jar in the fridge and when I wanted another glass, I took it out and put another couple of spoonfuls of sauce in a glass and made another "apple sauce juice" drink.

If your IBS is very severe, then I would recommend drinking the "apple sauce juice" after a meal or after you eat something with soluble fibre.

The best soluble fibre that seems to promote the most stability for IBS-D is white rice -- in particular organic white Basmati rice. However, rice can promote constipation if you suffer from IBS-C so please be careful if you do suffer from C.

Anyway I wanted to share my IBS-safe apple juice substitute with everyone on this board. We're starting into the cold/flu season. Why should I be the only one to enjoy this pleasant, Vitamin C-packed, IBS-safe, apple juice substitute?!!!
