I have read so much in the last couple of days. I wish I could get the book but I don't have a checking account or credit card, I would have to use money order and don't see an address. I found the page with all of the old recipies, how overwhelming, I had no idea! As I read, just like others, my doctors never told me anything like this. I am so afraid to eat a trigger food I have been starving myself, I go most of the day not eating and when I do it hurts. I can't buy all these different ingridents these new foods call for either. Is there anything I could make that is simple just for a couple days til I get more money. I also want to aks a question. The milk I buy is not soy or rice milk, it just says lactose free, is that not good to drink and it's low fat too. I also buy butter but it's lactose free and its very very low in fat and cholestral free, is that bad? I can't eat any sauces, like red sauces and that is really got me in a bind, I know nothing about oils either. Can anyone give me any suggestions? Sorry if I confused anyone!!!

Take care all of you
Jenn

Here's how to order through the mail: web page

Even though those products are made without lactose, they still contain whey & casein, other byproducts of milk that can cause GI upset. So, it's best to avoid them altogether. Does your grocery store sell the soy or rice milk?

The best oils to use are olive oil & canola oil. But, still use small amounts, because they are still fat and can cause problems if you eat them in large amounts. But, these oils are healthy to have, so be sure to not stop eating them.

You are C right? Try one of the soups from the recipe index with some bread (like french or sourdough). You want to make sure you keep yourself stable with soluble, but get enough insoluble. Also, try to get on a fiber supplement. This will help a lot! Try using either Benefiber or Citrucel. Of course, if you end up ordering from Heather, you can try Acacia. The powders generally work better than the pill forms.

Don't be afraid to eat. Not eating can cause more problems.

Thank you very much. My thing is I never know when to take the fiber supplement, I take 2 fibercon tablets and I have bad gas at night. I can not wake up and take them with water becuase water makes me sick to my stomach, I am not sure what to do. I thought about taking them before bed til my body gets used to them but you need water with it and as I said it makes me sick to my stomach. As far as food goes, I try so hard to just eat but what it all comes down to is I am overwhelmed by the foods on this site because every thing is so new and a different way of eating. I am gonna lay off the milk that I buy, that might be having an affect on me even though it's lactose free. I don't like not eating but my stomach hurts all the time and that causes me a lot of stress. I don't get it, it's not just when I need to use the bathroom it's all the time and I don't know what to do. I am on bentyl 3 times a day and most of the time I only take 2 a day. I am going to try and order Heathers book and try to change my life the best I can. Thanks for the response.

Take care
Jenn

i am sorry you are having such a hard time, but let me just say I can relate to you being overwhelmed. After a stage of not eating and being afraid to eat, your body probably does not want to be bothered with new foods. So, you're right about fearing the new recipes. I think before you try and undertake such a task as making elaborate meals, stick to simple things and begin adjusting to food slowly. Add soy milk to your diet gradually if you can get it. Also, if water makes you feel uneasy, do you know of anything that doesn't? Is water better if it is warmed or in the form of tea? Have you tried oatmeal? Rice cereals? If you haven't already, start testing very basic foods for possible "safe" meals as you adjust and recuperate from the stressful time you've been having (not eating, worrying about what to do to feel better, etc). Well, that's my amateur advice for you - let me know what you think. And I hope you feel better!

Hang in there Jenn. You have a lot of material to get through and don't overwelm yourself. You don't have to make all these recipes right now. Pick one with ingredients you may already have and add a new recipe every week if you can. I started off just following the basics of things to avoid - high fat - dairy- caffeine - carbonation - just starting with that it made a huge difference in how I felt. Eventually I added Acacia and Peppermint caps. I have gone from skipping meals all the time to eating small meals throughout the day. Let me tell you I never felt any better by skipping any meals and not eating anything (I spent a lot of time starving myself to avoid stomach pain and). It's better to have something in your stomach even if it's just bread or something from the safe to eat list. I'm sorry to hear that water is bothering you because I know it's the best thing for your belly especially when you are taking fiber. I started taking the Acacia not long ago but I start slowly with small amounts and increased over a few weeks. No problems with gas but a little bloating.

There's no easy answer to help you feel 100% right away but don't give up and do the best you can with changing your food habits and you should feel better. Can you get to the library? I ended up finding Heather's books there. You might even be able to go on your library's website and search for a copy. Reading her book was much easier that reading the website b/c you get the full story. I wish you all the best and hope you start feeling well.

I know exactly how you feel. With 3 young children who has time to cook special meals and read? I was in the same situation as you when I first started. I ate really basic things and have just added on. Water makes me feel worse at first, but in the long run it makes me better. I still have days when it is hard to eat anything, but my symptoms aren't as incapacitating as they used to be. I still have a hard time getting the fiber powder in, and need to do a better job with this. Keeping myself busy and exercising tends to help, and of course I couldn't do it without my prescription meds. Bentyl did nothing for me. I had to try several before I found something that helped. Good luck and keep persisting. I know it is hard with all your responsibilities. It is hard to make time for yourself but you have to.

Jenn, you sound very frustrated. You're not freaking out, are you? You need to calm down, you need to relax. Have you tried drinking peppermint tea? It's not too expensive, and you can get it at the grocery store. Plain white bread isn't too expensive either. Try some soy "egg nog," also which you can get at the grocery store. It's not too expensive, it's good for you, and it's very delicious.

These are some easy fixes for you. Others have left some excellent ideas for you here, so I won't repeat them.

I can understand your frustration; it's overwhelming for all of us. But you really need to relax. It'll come to all of us, I'm sure. We just need to read as much as we can and learn. And as we do the various recipes, we'll have fun learning new things. They really are fun, you know. I just made a new soup -- broccoli leek -- it was fun to do, it's really delicious, and it did not bother my tummy at all.

Later --
Bev.

Jenn,

You don't need to apologize...and you don't owe us an explanation! I think Bev (hope I'm not putting words in your mouth Bev), was just concerned and hopes you're ok. She's very caring and wouldn't want anything bad to happen to you

We ALL get frantic from IBS at times! It's CHALLENGING and very OVERWHLEMING! There are some people who've had it so bad they couldn't leave their house.

IBS is HARD STUFF to deal with.....but that's what makes this board so special! Everyone here has IBS...everyone is loving and supportive...and we have Heather to help us get there!

I'm really glad you're on the board Jenn...and I hope we can help you get better soon!

Love,
Ruchie
