Hi, folks! I've been gone a long time. In that time, I was on Medifast. Yes, it's not IBS safe, but frankly my doctors thought it was better to be on a bunch of IBS meds for one year, drop alot of weight and come off those meds than either gastric bypass or the risks that come with high blood pressure, diabetes, ect. The good news is that I lost 60lbs, my BP is normal, my blood sugar is normal. My doctor recommended using the McDougall program to maintain my loss. Has anyone had success? It looks awfully high in insoluble fiber and after only 2 meals on this program, I'm having MAJOR tummy problems. The breakfast was fine, oatmeal with applesauce, but the lunch was a chickpea paste on whole wheat bread. Is it possible to adapt the McDougal diet to be more IBS friendly? It's a very low fat, vegan diet but I wonder if changing out the brown rice and whole wheat bread for white will raise the calories.

Welcome back. Congratulations on your weight loss - that's a great accomplishment.

I don't know much about the McDougall program - just what a very quick scan told me. Specifically, swapping white rice for brown rice and white bread for whole grain bread won't make much difference in the calorie count. In fact, it looks like white rice, for example, may have a few fewer calories than brown rice. So your lunch could become one of the hummus recipes from the Recipe Board plus some plain pita.

It might be worth your while to take the McDougall guidelines and the IBS guidelines to a nutritionist and get her help melding the two. Since McDougall is vegan you should probably get some expert advice to make sure you get enough vegetable proteins in the right combinations.

HTH. Congratulations again - I'm super impressed. And good luck going forward.
