Does anyone have problems with rice and rice products?

Especially bloating? Or what other problems?

I have been feeling better in the last 3 days. So I'm trying to figure out if it's because of a dietary change or because of a medicine that my doc put me on (erythromyacin 250mg for 3 months, been taking it for a week). This medicine is supposed to help with C by acting as a prokinetic agent in the small intestine.

The major improvement (besides helping with C) is that I have hardly been bloated for the past three days! That has never happened before for three consecutive days, even when I was having daily BM without any medicine. I'm still eating according to EFI plus no wheat/gluten and low sugar but I've been able to cheat and have a few regular flour low-fat chocolate chip cookies every day and I'm still feeling pretty good.

The only significant dietary change I made that I haven't had any rice or rice products in the past few days. I used to eat TONS of rice - rice milk, cereal, rice cakes, rice crackers because rice is SF and good for IBS, right? So I'm wondering if rice could have been the culprit for my bloating, or if it's just a coincidence and it's all thank to the medicine.

What sort of confirms this suspicion was that when I was in Italy a few months ago I had hardly any bloating at all (I posted about it here before). Now that I think about it I only ate a very little rice (compared to what I eat normally). The only time I had rice was rice milk for breakfast and tiny amounts of rice flour in my cereal (was mostly oat and corn based). The rest was tons of polenta and potatoes.

I will definitely experiment with this later but tonight I have to start drinking the prep for tomorrow's colonoscopy so I'm sure my gut will be off balance for the next few days. Meanwhile I would really appreciate if everyone shared their own experience with rice and rice products, both positive and negative.

Hi Zara

Rice and rice products are staples for me.

Erythromycin is an antibiotic that has prokinetic properties. Has you doctor discussed the potential problems of the long term use of this antibiotic?

Good luck with the colonoscopy.

No, he just wanted to see if it works first. I was going to ask him about it tomorrow because I also don't think I should be on an antibiotic for that long. It does help with the C a lot so I like it but I am concerned about the long-term use. Are there any problems that you're aware of I should know about? Thanks !

I don't know of anything specific other than the little bit I have read about it in the research literature. Usually there is a statement about concerns about long term use. I just wondered what you doc had to say. If you ask him please tell us what he says.
