Trying to make my grocery list for next week...
I was thinking of getting some hummus- is that IBS safe if I have it with some white pita bread?
Should I get plain or would roasted red pepper or garlic be okay? (I remember reading garlic can be bad...I might have made that up though).

now see im confused on this one -- i used to eat it by the bucket loads while i was on heathers diet and it never affected me - infact i knew that i was pretty safe should everything else be playing up - however just recently when i havent been good and i cant seem to getmyself back on track - its really upset me !!! ( unless its something else doing it) im sorry i cant help you - why dont you try - at least then you will know not to touch it again - like so many other foods i guess its trial and error for everyone !! xxx

Hummus is supposed to be safe because all of the IF is all ground up and smooth, however I cannot tolerate legumes in any form, even processed smooth. So it's really trial and error. Sorry this wasn't more helpful!

Hummus is basically pureed Insoluble Fiber so it should be a very palatable way to get your IF (unless like one of the other posters you have trouble tolerating garbanzo beans). The pita you mention will provide a nice SF base.

I'd try plain hummus first. Garlic is an IF which means it should be eaten carefully under Heather's guidelines. Additionally, Heather warns that garlic is one of the sulfur-containing foods which means it's more likely to cause gas and gas can be quite upsetting to an IBS gut - not to mention being upsetting to the gut's owner. Red pepper is again an IF you should be able to eat provided you do so carefully but it's one of the vegetables that an awful lot of IBSers have trouble with. So I'd try plain hummus and if that goes well try garlic or red pepper next.

One word of warning about store-bought hummus - it's often loaded with oil which means the fat content can be awfully high. Eating it with pita will bring the overall fat content of your meal or snack down somewhat but do be cautious.

There are hummus recipes on the Recipe Board. Shell's Artichoke Hummus is particularly yummy.

I love hummus - I usually just buy the regular. I have it with rice or almond crackers, Tostitos or with homemade pita chips (cut a pita in triangles, bake for 12 - 15 min @ 300F). I have never had any trouble with it and its a great snack to for mid-afternoon!

I haven't tried baked Tostitos but I can't tolerate baked Lay's chips (even the plain kind). I think it must have to do with some of the flavorings/preservatives, I just don't know which one .

Store bought hummus might have things you don't want in it. Take drained chickpeas from can, about 1/4c-1/3c tahini, 1/2 lemon juice, salt, pepper and optional cilantro, parsley, paprika, cumin, hot pepper and garlic and blend. I make mine spicy and eat it with pitas and veggies like a wrap, but spicy doesn't bother me. I also add just a little oil and sometimes a little water to make it just right. It is so easy to make!

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

I don't get a stomach ache, but they definately affect my BMs, and not in a good way. I was excited when I found them at Wal Mart, but now I just try to stay away from them. I think the vegetable oil in the chips is what gives me problems. I have a hard time with most oils.
