How many experience bladder/urethra irritation? (or Interstitial cystitis)
What are your symptoms?

Did you develop this before or after starting IBS symtoms.

I find it interesting how IC is often present in people with IBS. I was reading a bit from the library here.
Can anyone add to this condition and how the two are related to each ohter?

Any information would be wonderful.

Thanks!

Carolyn,

Sorry to hear of the bladder / urinary issues. I don't know if it's 100% related, but I too have been having some bladder / urinary issues as well, kind of around the time the IBS starting getting worse.

I went to my urologist, and he said said I have no prosate issues, except for a mild case of cystitis.

Now that a few people ask about this, it sounds like it can be more related than I thought.

I will tell you this, whenever I had a bad IBS episode, I also had urinary issues. I had to urinate quite frequently, just after a bowel movment, and any IBS flare ups.

I'm alomost 1 week into my healthy eating, and it has made a difference in how I feel in many ways. While tough to give up our favorite foods, it will help in multiple areas, i would think?

Hi Steve,

That sounds just like me too! The bladder issues came with IBS.
Very strange and interesting indeed.

I am new at the diet too (just a tad ahead of you for a few weeks now). It is my hope that if I can get IBS under control, the other discomforts will subside as well.

Good luck to you with all of this!
Let's keep in touch.

Carolyn

Yes, I think everything is linked too!
I have anxiety problems occasionally and have wondered the same thing myself; even before I came to this message board.
Thanks for commenting.

Do you eliminate othere foods from your diet?
My urologist gave me a (very long) list of foods that may increase the irritation. (coffee, fruits, cola etc...)
As a matter of fact, I ate just a few strawberries the other day a noticed it made things worse.

Right now I concentrate on the IBS diet and just take it easy on the acidic things. That method seems to help.

If I put my two lists together for EFI and IC irritants.....it is discouraging.
Just curious what you are doing food wise.

Thanks!

Hi, I started having IC symptoms less than a year before my IBS symptoms started. Took me about 7 months to get a diagnosis and start treatment, but I found info about the IC diet on my own, which offered some relief. Really, though, the biggest help has been my IC medication, Elmiron. Now I only have to avoid the most acidic foods, and do okay otherwise.

This site was an invaluable help to me when I was trying to get a diagnosis:
http://www.ic-network.com

The diet section and the forums were especially helpful. There are plenty of veteran posters there who can help answer questions.

I have interstitial cystitis as well! Its terrible to have both elimination areas always irritated. I hope you feel better soon. I take a supplement called d-mannose. It doesn't cure it, but it helps alot.

I've been having painful/frequent bladder symptoms before I got my IBS. It's a daily battle. Clear drinks and warm underwear help. Avoid acidy drinks.
