How is lactose intolerance diagnosed? Is there a test?

Also, what is the difference between lactose intolerance and not being able to tolerate dairy because of IBS?

Lactose intolerance is an inability to digest the sugar lactose found in dairy. It is diagnosed with a breath test or by dietary exclusion. It occurs frequently in normal as well as IBS suffers. This problem is overcome by using lactose free milk and cheeses or by taking the enzyme lactase immediately before consuming dairy.

While many IBS suffers report problems with dairy other than problems with lactose there is little evidence in the IBS research literature supporting this notion. However, there is a bit of evidence suggesting that some IBS suffers may be exhibit an immune system response to some proteins in dairy which may aggrevate IBS.
