Where are you gals? How are you doing? What are you gals doing? I wonder about you! Hope you have found some answers or diet that you are okay with. You both were "in the dark", as far as gluten, etc. last time I remember.

Hi Jordy!

I'm doing much better. I haven't been online for ages because i'm not following the EFI diet at all. I'm just following a strictly gluten free diet - not even eating oats - with minimal dairy (have milk in my tea and coffee and occasional chocolate). It's working well. My constipation is practically non-existant! I'm having BMs daily and not taking any supplements. The only thing i still suffer with is the bloating but it's bareable as it's nowhere near as bad as it used to me. How are things with you??? Hope you're doing ok.

xxx

Sarah! Glad to hear you've found something that works for you! Yay!!!

IBS-A since age 12, and fructose sensitive; with the exception of my pregnancy, have been following Heather's diet since Nov. 19, 2007.
Taking 12g of Acacia per day. Relatively stable since March 2008!

Thanks me too! I'm seeing a specialist dietitian tomorrow- she's going to look at the foods i've eaten over the last 7 days to try to establish what's causing the bloating so my IBS may get even better... Here's hoping. How's it all going with you? x

What are you eating? What EFI foods/principles are you not following? I don't mean to be nosey...just that I have lost all perspective as to how to even do this...other than to eat meat or real fat mayo! Amd of course, not taking an SFS.

It's so good to hear from you...and to hear that you are doing well and have a little more freedom with your diet.

I don't think I can do both EFI and GF anymore..so I have to choose which one to keep and which to experiment with. Both ideas scare me!

Hi there !

Sarah, I'm so glad you're doing so much better! I'm also trying to stick to GF but recently realized that I've been eating a lot of it unknowingly (in sauces, etc.) so I have to be more careful. I'm curious what the dietitian has to say about your food log - please let us know .

Jordy, the reason I haven't been on here much lately is because I felt like I was getting too paranoid about every possible food that made someone else sick. I realized that I need to figure out what causes ME problems and that I need to take it slow. For example, someone posts here that they have problems with bananas, so I'm like, OMG, I eat them all the time! So I stop for a few days and then I remember days when I was doing pretty well while eating them so I incorporate them again. I felt like I was jumping from one approach to another with mixed results. But I couldn't abandon the site completely so I was still checking new posts .
I've been thinking about why I was doing so well while I was in Italy a month ago. I was really constipated (always like that when I travel) but no bloating and no pain. I was sticking to GF and mostly EFI (sometimes I ate a few fries, sometimes couldn't get SF with my meal, etc. - no big cheating though). I tried to stick to the same diet when I got back but my problems came back (although not as bad as when eating gluten) and it hit me that I also ate very little sugar at that time! And now I'm definitely eating more, I love York Peppermint Patties so I have a bunch of those pretty much every other day, I drink dairy free hot chocolate - all that extra sugar! So for the next few days I'm going to try and stick to GF, EFI, and low sugar (just from fruits) and see what happens.

This is a very easy thing to do...and I know I have fallen into this anxiety too and should follow your example and just take a break.

I forgot you were in Italy!!!! How cool!

Good luck following both the EFI and the GF diet. It is so hard. I think I may give up the EFI diet (or, less likely, the GF). I am just too constipated and it doesn't seem to help me as much as it has others. But I'm scared to let go of it.

Forgive me, but why do you eat GF? Did you test positive for antibodies? Oh, how's the Acacia treating you!

I'm glad you popped in with an update.

Ya know, I may be getting gluten from unknown sources too. How did you realize what products actually contained it? I can't imagine it would be in too many products. Hopefully? Have you ever met with a dietician?

Anyhow, good to hear from you! I totally understand the need to step back. I have eliminated so many foods from my diet based on what other people have posted. It's very easy to fall into that fear.

I never tested positive for gluten antibodies. But I heard that if you have none to very low immunoglobulin A (which is my case) the test can be false negative. So I tried the GF diet and noticed some improvement (that was back in 06). Now that I think about it I was also eating very little sugar at that time so it could have been a combination of both. And I was eating dairy. I still have no idea if dairy is a yes or a no for me - I think something else every week, lol! I'll experiment once I'm stable.

I didn't notice anything different since I started the Acacia. I don't feel worse but I don't feel better either.

I never met with a dietitian, I'm just using the information I've read in books/on the internet. I realized that I wasn't careful enough with gluten since it's actually in a lot of non-wheat cereals (honey-nut cheerios, generic rice chex...) hidden as barley malt extract. Some ethic cuisine sauces also contain gluten (last one I noticed was Kikkoman's black bean sauce in my fridge). So stuff like that I just really need to watch out for.

I'm currently scheduled for another GI test - my last one I guess. It's the pillcam test and I'm having it done next Tuesday. The only thing I think they could possibly find would be flattened villi that the endoscopy missed (they didn't go far down enough, etc.). But even if that's negative many people can still be gluten intolerant even when no physical damage is shown. I think that's my case since I do feel better GF. I think . I'll know for sure once I'm stable!

How are you doing? Which diet are you following at the moment? EFI?

Hi Zara!

Gosh i've missed you, jordy and erilyn!

Yeah, i felt the same as you- i.e. getting paranoid about what i could and couldn't eat. Plus, i found the EFI diet far too stressful, particularly as i don't feel it wroks for me.

Jordy - i'm literally not following any of the EFI principles. I'm drinking coffee, eating dairy products, not watching my SF/IF intake etc etc. I'm just being super strict in not let a hint of gluten pass my lips.

Saw the dietitian this afternoon and she was amazed at the positive response i've had from cutting out gluten (ie minimal bloating and going from having a BM once-twice a week to having it daily). She suspects that i have celiacs but doesn't think it's worth testing for since it means going back to eating gluten and i'm already self-treating it even if i do have it. PLus, i've had problems with my teeth enamel recently which also suggests i've got celiacs so she wants me to eat as much dairy as possible to prevent osteoporosis.

All those who are reading this and following the EFI diet- i'm aware that i'm speaking of a diet other than Heather's but i'm not saying that everyone should follow this. I'm just giving an update on my progress so please don't get mad and thinking i'm hijacking Heather's board/diet.

"she wants me to eat as much dairy as possible"

OMG, you lucky girl ! I wish! Dairy is what I miss the most. But I'm so glad you're doing so well on the GF diet! And I agree - if you have such positive diet response why go back to eating it? What if you found out that you're "only" gluten intolerant as opposed to having celiacs? That there would be no point of eating it anyway. I'm not eating gluten for the pillcam test either. I figured that I've been glutening myself so much in the past that if I actually do have some damage it would show anyway. And if I don't then at least I'm not making myself sick.

Also, as I mentioned before I'm interested if sugar could cause me problems. Did you by any chance decrease the amount of sugar you eat? Or have you just never really eaten much of it anyway? I consider myself an addict, I'm surprised I don't have diabetes by now . I do try to eat healthy but I realized that even the healthy foods (especially snacks) are pretty high in sugar - granola bars, protein bars, chocolate, candy, and I'm not counting sugar from fruit. I really need to cut back .

But anyway, glad you hear you're doing so much better ! Keep us posted!
