I hope I'm posting in the right place, forgive me if I'm not.
The 2 people I know that have ibs say the fennel and peppermint tea help them, as well as the kind people on here.
My first question is, why do I seem to be the only one that has trouble drinking them?
Also, why does there seem to be no pain killer that can control the terrible pain?
A Couple of months ago I was in the emergency room with the worst pain I ever had in my life. It took being hooked up to an iv with 5 hours of pain meds to fix. I'm at the end of my rope and so close to planning my own death. PLEASE... If anyone knows something, HELP!

Hello Kim:

I note you are located in Canada. I am too ... in Toronto. I've had IBS all of my life and I've gone through exactly the same thing as you. But I have had the pain completely under control through Heather's diet for more than five years now.

Please write to me at belinda958@yahoo.ca and I will do my best to help you so that you can begin planning your life.

If you are in Canada, I will also be able to recommend some food products available here that are IBS-safe, including bread products, etc.

Please don't despair anymore.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Belinda

Thank you for responding. I will do just that.

I am so happy that you have been doing good for so long. I hope someday soon that will be me too.

Please be sure you've had all the necessary tests to diagnose IBS. There are other conditions that can mimic it and it's very, very important to rule them out.

If the problem you have with peppermint and fennel tea is that you don't like the taste, you can try peppermint capsules instead and hide the fennel in another tea like Rainbow Rooibos.

Pain was never my predominant symptom but what helped the most (in fact the only thing that helped at all) with all my IBS symptoms was - as Belinda says - following Heather's guidelines. As far as meds go, Tylenol with codeine helps when things go kerflooey like with a stomach virus or food poisoning.

HTH.

Welcome Kim,

From another Canuck to another, it's not easy to live with IBS. And sometimes finding what will work for you may take time. For tea, I love peppermint, but I'm getting sick of it so I have some mint blends - Shoppers Drug Mart makes a Life Brand tea called Tranquility. I also drink Rooibos with apricot and peach from Celestial Seasonings. Adjusting to the diet will also take time and your frustration level will be high, but it does work. I've had IBS for over 16 years and Heather's diet is the only thing that works for me. My pain is GREATLY lessened; I used to be on the verge of passing out during attacks. Now if I have an attack it's much milder and much shorter. Now, just so you are aware, the diet works, but it's not necessarily an overnight fix. I had a bad spell starting Feb 06, and it took me until Jan 08 to get stable again. It is difficult, but worth it. I'm a new person!

If you have any questions, please feel free to post! Don't let yourself get to the end of your rope. There are a lot of very caring and helpful people here.

Best of luck!
