Anyone else here with both IBS and GERD, and taking meds for GERD?

I had GERD first and the meds worked pretty well but since also developing IBS I have more break through symptoms. I plan to discuss this with my GI. I was on Nexium originally through my PCP then when I starting seeing the GI he switched me to Zegerid.

So, if you have IBS and GERD do you have breakthough heartburn and how often? Also, which med are you taking for your GERD?

Hi! I have IBS & GERD. I take Prilosec for my GERD and it is a life saver. Although I know you're not suppose to, I take Prilosec every day. If I didn't I would suffer every day. I don't experience actual heartburn so much as that lump feeling in my throat and diarrhea.

Snowy, is Prilosec by prescription or OTC? When you say you're not supposed to take it every day, how is it supposed to be taken?

I have GERD and IBS-C. I am on 30 mg Prevacid twice a day (morning and night) and then also take a Zantac OTC before bed. The new GI doc I see came up with this regime and it works great for me. Good luck with things!

I also have IBS-C and Gerd. In the past I took prilosec for several of months but now I am on pepcid perscription of 20mg 2wice a day and the reflux is soooooo much better. I also have a pillow from Med-slant that is elevated wedge and I know that helps too.

I've got the slanty pillow too.

I feel really stupid but I did some checking and I'm not taking my 2nd dose of Zegerid properly. I take the 1st dose in the morning on an empty stomach and wait an hour to eat. With the 2nd dose I take it an hour before dinner but I never have worried about snacking right up until this time. Turns out I should not eat anything for 2 hours before I take it or else it won't work at max effectiveness. I have adjusted this as of today. I hope to see some better results now.

Prilosec is OTC but I also recently found out that a lot of Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance coverages are covering it if you get a prescription from your doctor. For me that means a difference of $25 a month to $10 which is my copay. Prilosec says your supposed to take it in 14 day cycles. It's a little confusing to know how often to take the 14 day cycles is okay.
