I think my IBS would be million times better if i didn't work or if i just worked part-time. Does anyone else think this? Also, what do you guys do for jobs and does it help or hinder your IBS?

Thanks

I often think my IBS would practically GO AWAY if I didn't have to work. I remember in high school that my symptoms would just about disappear during holidays. Since I've been doing this job (6 years now working at a desk, full time, Monday to Friday), I usually found that my symptoms disappeared during holidays as well, except for last summer. Hubby and I went on a short road trip in July and my tummy wasn't feeling too great. We took another short trip in September, and again, my tummy was definately not 100%. This is odd for me because, like I said, my tummy was usually fine during time away from work. Another reason why I decided to try EFI!

I do wonder though if I'm just been extra stressed these past few months because last June, for the first time in my adult life, I was debt-free! I know that's GOOD, but at the same time it was sort of scary because it meant the next step was saving for a house, which means, well, buying a house! Then we started thinking about relocating, which means finding new jobs, trying to coordinate timing buying a house and starting new jobs around the same time, actually PHYSICALLY moving to a whole new city, plus the added responsibility of paying a mortgage vs. rent, being a homeowner and having to fix your own problems, then starting a family and being able to afford it all....

Needless to say, my mind likes to run away with me sometimes. I think that's why my IBS had been so bad lately. But back to the orginal question, yes, I think my IBS would be a lot better if I didn't have work to stress about.

I found that changing careers has made a huge difference for my IBS and I still work full time. I left an extremely fast-paced, highly stressful job where I averaged 60+ hours a week M-F. And I wasn't comfortable there for the last 2 years or so. I was miserable at work and dead tired all the time and it took a toll on my body. Since November when I left and moved to 35 hours a week in a completely different field, I'm a new person. I have had a couple minor attacks, but nothing like before where it was 4-5 attacks per day.

So, no, you don't have to necessarily stay home from work, but you have to find something that works for you. I have an amazing boss who knows I have IBS and if I'm having a bad day she would let me go home, however I haven't needed to! Find something you enjoy doing that minimizes on stress and is a good working environment.

Good Luck!

I changed jobs 6 months ago and whilst i am doing the same sort of office work, weekday 9-5 the pure fact of changing brought on a period of instability. I was so stressed by the changes of commuting by public transport rather than driving, meeting new people and being judged on my performance i wanted to give up and stay home. I found though that every time i had an attack i needed to force myself to go into work otherwise i could have developed a phobia by linking my symptoms to work. I'm starting to stabilise now but i'm still only eating a limited amount of safe foods. I'll get there in the end I'm lucky that if i have an attack i can leave the room to rush to the bathroom - the only thing that makes me nervous is my 1 & 1/2 hour commute. Personally i know i couldn't cope with shift work as my body needs routine and sleep!

Not working is not an option for many of us. After I got diagnosed and realized that stress played a big part in my attacks I have consciously worked on the stress and I have changed the way I work. First, I changed my hours so that I could avoid the worst of traffic. Second, I stopped handling the more stressful types of cases (I am an attorney). Third, I set aside time during the day to destress or unwind and use that time to meditate, do yoga or just plain veg out. I work for myself so it was easier in many ways to make the changes I made. However, I believe that anyone can incorporate certain changes and if you determine that your job is making you sick then you need a new job--quiting and staying home is not a good option unless you truly have that financial freedom and then I would be concerned about reinforcing phobias that are related to the mind/gut thing.

Barbara you are absolutely right. I would definitely be worried about reinforcing the phobias of leaving the house if I was home all the time. I used to think it would be fantastic to work from home – but then I'd probably just get worse because I'd become so comfortable I would freak when I actually did have to leave! I think that, ideally, I'd like to work part-time, outside the home. But – I gotta have some kids first and then figure it out from there!

I have to agree that I think my symptoms would be much less if I worked from home on my own schedule...when I was a teacher, constantly on my feet and busy, I hardly had any symptoms. Now that I work a desk job I find that now I have time to obsess and constantly think about my IBS and symptoms.

I am perfect example of why IBS is affected by work..I am a top producer Sales Rep for a dental company but the stress of monthly, quartley numbers is getting real old.And my IBS somedays KILLS ME. Plus, my company's core product is now defective. This has been going on for quite sometime now. And I have had Enough!!And some days I can not figure out why I will get these horrible IBS pains when I eat strickly the IBS diet?? Hello its the stress and drama here.

So I have decided to change careers. I will be interviewing Monday for Physician Liason Marketing Rep. The job will be traveling but no over night and local no more than 30 min away from my home No sales quota as it will still be sales/marketing but referals from Specialist doctors to Primary Care doctors.I can make my own schedule and work from home some days No more commisions a straight salary..that will be huge relief

So wish me luck !!
