I take both Lactulose as well as fibre supplement, either Metamucil or Benefibre.
I have continuous bloating at times and I suspect more to do with lactulose. Anybody else had real problems with lactulose? I see own doctor next week and specialist in early April.

When I looked lactulose up on wikipedia it said something about transfering a sugar from fructose and galactose into lactose to make lactulose. I think if I got that right. Maybe that is it. Lactose is hard to digest and can cause bloating in people. Also it is chemicaly made that could cause problems. I'm just thinking out loud here.
You could always ask your doctor/GI.

Well family doctor wamts me to stick with the Metamucil and lactulose if possible because of diverticulosis although presnt symptoms relate more to IBS.
I have another appointment next week with him as well as an appointment with specialist but not until April 3.
Earliest possible date.

I don't know about lactulose but Metamucil made me really bloated. Is there a reason your doctor prefers it to Benefiber?

Benefiber or Benefibre as known here in Canada does not have the same forumla as the States. It uses unilin I believe it is called and it is equally bloating as Metamucil according to a lot of people. However experimenting with it as it is much more concentrated as fiber in serving.

Right, now I remember people mentioned the inulin in Benefiber here before. Are there any other fibers available in Canada that don't contain psyllium husk or inulin?

Our Benefibre used to be made with guar gum - that's what I was taking before trying Heather's acacia (then I figured out that the Acacia is far more cost effective because Benefibre is not cheap!) Now it is made with inulin. I've been seeing ads on the TV for this new Catelli "Smart" pasta that is made with extra soluble fibre. I checked it out at the grocery store last weekend and it, too, has inulin. I don't know why that crap is suddenly so popular.
-------------------- IBS-A since age 12, and fructose sensitive; with the exception of my pregnancy, have been following Heather's diet since Nov. 19, 2007.
Taking 12g of Acacia per day. Relatively stable since March 2008!
