Can someone tell where to read about the BRAT diet and what it stands for. (Bread, Rice, Applesauce, Tea?) I had a relapse recently and need to re-start but can't find the chapter on this. Thanx.

I thought it was Bananas, Rice, Apples, Toast but might be wrong. I don't remember if that exact diet is listed here but you can read about breaking the cycle of IBS here.

Yeah, I thought it was bananas, rice, apple sauce, and toast.

BRAT stands for banana, rice, applesauce and toast. We use this diet in our hospital for patients that are having problems with diarrhea. We use cream of rice with breakfast and regular white rice for other meals. The toast is dry. These foods are easy to digest and also help to bind stools.

Choose your bread very carefully. It should be not whole grain wheat and should have no HFCS or dairy in it. Otherwise the brat diet can make you worse. IMO potato should be subbed for bread.

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!
