I'm IBS-D and I had been taking Metamucil with disastrous consequences. Thank god this site exists so it could steer me away from it.

I stopped at Duane Reade pharmacy and picked up their store brand fiber powder. the ingredient list is - maltodextrin and guar gum. Are these ingredients safe? they're clearly not the potential destruction that is metamucil.

anyway, down the hatch it goes. we'll see how i feel tomorrow morning.

I know guar gum is SF - which is what you want. I'm not sure about maltodextrin. Does it dissolve completely in water? Or are there still gritty particles (like Metamucil)? If it dissovles completely then it is all SF.

Taking 12g of Acacia per day. Relatively stable since March 2008!

They are both SF. Give it a try and tell us how it goes.

It depends on the source of the maltodextrin. For instance, I switched to acacia fiber because Benefiber (which used to work for me like a charm) changed their formula, which now includes maltodextrin, derived from wheat. Which makes it totally unacceptable, now, as an SFS (soluble fiber supplement) by many IBS sites. But, not all maltodextrin is derived from wheat... much of it is made from rice, corn, or potato starch.

I'd say you need to find out what type of maltodextrin is in there, and can you tolerate it? does it help? I would be interested to know if it works well for you.

best of luck

Maltodextrin is a hydrolised starch from any sources that contains less than 20 glucose molecules stuck together. Essentially it is a long string of glucose (a sugar) molecules and contains nothing else.

What is the problem with dextrin from wheat? If you are worried about gluten Benefiber is gluten free.
