Help! I can't get myself out of the spiral of attacks I've been suffering for the last 4 months (I'm IBS-D). I seem to be stable for 10 days max before having another attack. I have been following Heather's diet advise religiously and have also recently(3 weeks ago) been given Colofac (antispasmodic) and Amitryptaline(low dose antidepressent) by my gastro. Every time that I feel ready to expand my diet and start cooking some of her wonderful recipes I suffer another attack and have to go back to eating bread, rice and pasta and seem to be relying more and more on Immodium. Any tips or alternative suggestions greatfully received.

I have lost 22 pounds in weight (dropped from 136 to 116 in 4 months. My gastro wants me to start taking nutritional replacement supplements like Ensure or Resource to up my calorie intake and ensure I'm getting enough vitamins and minerals but I'm not sure about them. Does anyone have any experience with either of them? I belive Ensure is milk based so I'll be stearing clear of it.

Ensure is lactose and gluten free although in the list of ingredients milk protein is listed. It is made by Ross Products division of Abbott Laboratories - you could probably go to their website and check out the ingredients. I'm not sure about Resource. I have used Ensure in the past when I was at my worst and never had a problem with it. At least I felt I was getting some nutrition when using it. Good luck - hope this helps.

I tried Ensure or Boost once - can't remember which - and it gave me a severe attack!

Maybe you could try a rice protein powder and a multi-vitamin? Talk to you doctor about it first though.

IBS-A since age 12, and fructose sensitive; with the exception of my pregnancy, have been following Heather's diet since Nov. 19, 2007.
Taking 12g of Acacia per day. Relatively stable since March 2008!
